Anyone else read this article on Offbeat Bride today? I loved it.
Which of her points of contention with photog websites do YOU agree with?
First of all, turn the freaking music off. Seriously. I’m probably looking at your site at work and it’s hard to find the off button and I probably don’t like the music you picked nor do I care since I didn’t come to you for music. Don’t do it — it’s downright annoying!
Secondly, it should not take 100 years for your site or gallery to load. The best way to ensure this is to NOT USE FLASH! And while we’re on the subject of the gallery, how to move from one picture to another should be obvious to my grandmother and I should be able to peruse the thumbnails. I should also be able to use the keyboard or the scroller on my mouse to move through the pictures (which is another reason NOT TO USE FLASH!) Also, I’m pretty sure 75% of you all have the exact same Flash site re-branded. Stop it. Want something inexpensive? Try WordPress with a custom template design. [Editor’s note: or even just a good pre-made theme.] And do NOT have your gallery or site pop-up! EVER!
Thirdly, don’t have your blog header take up the entire screen. I get confused and think there are no posts or something. And if you don’t have a blog with most of your current wedding previews, make one.
Fourthly, tell me how much you cost. I don’t care if you do “custom” packages, tell me how much your typical package is and what it includes.
Fifth, I’m probably going to post the photos on facebook. If you have a problem with this, the best way to handle it is to give me lo-res versions of all pictures with your watermark. Then everyone is happy.
Lastly, tell me WHERE YOU LIVE. I totally get that you want to travel and stuff but I’m not looking to pay for that so make it really obvious where you live and shoot weddings generally. Don’t make me look up your area code on google. Instead how about say “Chicago Wedding Photographer” instead of just “Wedding Photographer.”

This is great – – I couldn’t choose one so I voted for 1, 2, and 5

I 100% agree on every item. Music, flash, money are the big ones. Photogs on WB will probably complain about these things though.

omg i hated searching for photogs!!! i would get pissed if they didnt have pricing info and just wouldnt bother even contacting them! its their loss.

I actually liked hearing music on the photographers’ websites! It’s how I found a lot of the songs I want played at the wedding!
But I do agree with the cost. I want to know right away if I can afford them rather than having to waste time to sent them an email and to wait for their response. It’s also annoying when their site and images take forever to load. Finally, I also agree with a simple statement on where the photographer is located and where they take their business!

I voted for all of them except the fifth–I especially agree with not wanting any popups or a really slow site, and pricing!

I never understood why people don’t share costs. At my old job (daycare) we weren’t allowed to give prices over the phone the whole idea being that once people see the place and how amazing everything is they will want to spend the extra money. Thats just ridiculous, I have X amount of money to spend no more no less (ok I’d be fine with less), all these emails back and forth to find out your are triple what I can pay is just wasting both our time!!!

omg 100% on ALL of these points. the music drives me nuts, and my biggest pet peeve is the “custom packages” and “we travel” thing – i ended up having all these emails in my inbox of people way out of my price range and could have saved us BOTH alot of time if the info was there upfront.
and flash doesnt work on my work computer. bleh. lol

I agree with all of them. This is a great article.

So how do we go about sharing this with the photography community EVERYWHERE? haha…

I agreed with all of them. although i dont care that much about the facebook thing. My two biggest pet peeves are music and flash. I HATE FLASH. And it is like industry standard or something. It doesn’t make me think you look more professional, it just annoys the crap out of me.
And yes… why not just post pricing right on there? It saves both of us time!

Lol, I posted a mini-rant about this last week! I HATE the flash/fancy stuff that takes forever to load on my old school computer, and it drives me nuts to go through the process of calling or emailing someone just to get their prices… It wastes everyone’s time!

OMG. I just posted something this morning on WB about ‘investments’ on photogs site. I wish they would put their pricing on the site for all to see. That’s the biggest pet peeve I have with them. Fall in love with their pics and then see that they are out of your price range

@ddw: Oh, this exact list get’s tossed around on all the photography boards all the time! You would think more photographers would listen to it. Imagine that, stubborn big headed artists…. lol (and I say that in the most loving I’m a photographer way: -) I’m only guilty of MAYBE 3… depending on the size of your screen 😉

@KLP2010: If only boycotting were an option…. but if everyone keeps doing it, we all still need photogs!
