I’m a Canon user also.  For my vacations, my all purpose lens is now a 18-200.   I used to bring two, a 10-22 and a 28-135, because I kept finding that 28 was just wasnt wide enough for my liking, especially for city shots.

i went on a 2 week trip to europe and didn’t want to bring more than 1 lens. i brought a 35mm (i have a full frame sensor) and i was happy with that!

@auggiefrog:  I got the Sigma one.  I caught it on amazon one day for like $280, so I couldnt pass it up for that price.  For the most part I like it, it’s really heavy though.  But I haven’t really compared side by side shots with the other two lenses – I was borrowing those from a friend (and his camera) before I got my own.  I compared a few shots with the kit lens and the color and sharpness were pretty much identical.  Compared to the 10-22, I dont think its as sharp and saturated (could totally be using the wrong terms here), but that was also a 7 or 800 dollar lens so I wouldnt expect it to be.

Favorite go to lens is the 50mm 1.2, then probably 70-200 2.8. If you are not really comfortable with the 50, then get an 85 1.4. 18-200 is not a bad 3rd-4th option.

@auggiefrog:  70-200 2.8 is fantastic, but heavy. Hope you ate your wheaties!!! LOL try a monopod, offsets the weight. Great overall lens. I am very comfortable with it. Still the 50mm 1.2 is the lens I would take, if I could only have one. The 70-200 2.8 would be my #2.

I’d take my 50mm 1.4 (1.2 is better, but I’ve always been happy with my 1.4), 24-70, and 10-22.

I never use long range lenses… but I guess maybe its just not my style. When I think of ireland i think of amazing sweeping landscape portraits– the 10-22 would be amazing for that (but only if you have a cropped frame camera, doesn’t work on full frame).
