    @mariematt:  My opinion is that I got screwed.  So thanks for telling me how to feel.  There was absolutely NOTHING in my contract about ever having to pay additional money to get the engagement photos.  Any time it referenced the e-shoot, it said it was free.  So yeah, I feel like I got screwed.  And as a first time bride, how on Earth am I supposed to know that this is a common practice??  The OP didn’t know it was common either.  Lay off.

    I do engagement sessions to get a feel for working with the couple and vv. the session is free, and they get a full-res digital file to do with as they please. if they want all of the full-res files? yeah…I charge for it. I do try to communicate all of that, but doing the session and the image you did get still have value…the experience counts for a lot!

    letting your photographer know that what happens with the engagement pictures wasn’t clear shouldn’t be a tension-filled or high drama thing…just let him/her know and then let him/her respond. and then decide how to proceed.

    @CoCoCourtney:  how’d you arrive at $181/image?

    also, figure out how many you’d want and what you’d want to do with them…do you like 7, want 5 for fb and 2 to print? if you can live with a small watermark, I bet the photographer will give you web-res copies for free and then you can decide if ordering prints or purchasing the files fits your budget better.

    @CoCoCourtney:  ah…yeah, if you paid for the shoot, that would feel a bit different, and i can understand your frustration. :/ i’ve had both situations…where i drove over 2 hours to clients (and didn’t charge them travel) or clients drove over 3! hours to me. again…i never charged for engagement sessions unless they hadn’t booked me…and if they booked me after, that price was applied toward the wedding fee, so…

    basically, i think if you can call/email him WITHOUT going into it with your emotions already at an 11…and just say, “oh hey…this totally wasn’t clear to me, and it’s a bit frustrating…what can we do to come up with a resolution.” chances are, he’s going to come up with something that’ll make you happier.

    also, i’m pretty much never going to suggest that a bride offer a pinterest board link/shot list to a photographer (beyond a small handful), but if you want more ideas going in than you think he’s going to give you, perhaps for the wedding YOU can look up ideas, and then pose yourself…similar to what you did for the e-session.

    (also! see! if you hadn’t worked with him already you wouldn’t 1) know he’s nice but 2) you want to have some of your own ideas in your pocket ready to pull out)

    lastly, you actually may be the first bride with whom he’s had this misunderstanding…or the first one who’s said anything. maybe he usually remembers to mention that files are separate or maybe he’s trying out something new, or maybe no one has been willing to voice their frustration. photographers aren’t (usually) out to pull the wool over clients’ eyes or generally frustrate them. it’s shooting themselves in the feet to do so!

    good luck! let us know how your communication with your photographer goes…and remember, he’s just a guy. a nice guy!
