This is not for a wedding but a birthday party I am throwing. I’m looking for a wedding album type feel, candids, decorations, suroundings, ect…. Probably for a few hours.
We have a great photography school in town. I am going to advertise and see if a student looking to build their portfolio would be interested in shooting for us.
How much should I offer them? They will have rights to the photos to use in their porfolio but it still seems like I should pay them on top of that. Should I go by hour or by total event? Anything I should layout for them? I’ve never hired a photographer any help would be great!

Our photogs for 6 hrs and two shooters was $2000. I might offer a student half the rate of one photog, which with my company, would be about $700.
You can also ask the school, or even ask those who apply how much they want.

Since it’s for a birthday party the rates got way way down compared to weddings. I think SO used to charge $160-220 ish per hour for non-wedding. I’ll ask him when I see him. He’s semi-pro. Makes money but not a living.

@ladyartichoke: haha and this is why I don’t respond at 5am. I agree with lady A. I’d offer about $300 to $500 for around 5-6 hours.
