I picked a dress! I was between ordering a size 6 or size 8. I normally am a size 2 for a normal dress. It freaks me out that I am ordering such a larger size but the lady said wedding dresses tend to be several sizes bigger than your regular size. Anyway, the reason I was between a 6 and an 8 was because my hips measurement indicated size 6 while my waist and bust indicated size 8. I went with the size 8 to be safe as she assured me an 8 could be altered to fit me while a 6 they could only do so much if it was too tight. I have to admit I was a bit surprised of the measurements she told me. When I got home I measured myself and sure enough, I got a completely different measurement in the bust and waist. According to my measurements, I am an inch smaller than what they told me at the store. Now I am worried I should have ordered the 6 instead of the 8. Do they typically measure you and allow for extra room? I really want the bust of my dress to be very fitted to me and not loose at all. I don’t know what to do, should I go back and be remeasured? When I held the tape at the measurement that she told me I was in the bust, I couldn’t even get the tape measure to touch my body, that’s how off it was.

An 8 will be fine and you should go with the biggest measurement. It’s very hard to accurately measure yourself. I trust the consultant – they know what they’re doing.

@dontstopbeelievin: listen to me now. Bridal sizes run SMALL. Trust the sales people, and I think you’ll be glad you went with the bigger size. I am a street size 2-4, and when they measured me, my hips put me perfectly at the end of a 4, but maybe a 6. I am SO GLAD I went with the 6. My hips just fit when my dress came in, and even though my bust and waist will have to be taken in- if I had ordered a 4, the dress would have been too small. Alterations will save you and you’d rather have some extra room to deal with than not enough 🙂

I totally sympathize with you!! What designer is your gown? And what brand do you typically wear a 2 in? I did something similar to compare and it made me feel much better.

Yup yup yup: most bridal lines have not kept up with modern vanity sizing. (take a look at tags in vintage clothing to see how drastically sizing has changed over the years)
Normally I’m a street size 6-8 and my wedding gown is a 12 (!). No big whoop. 🙂

@purplepie45: My dress is a Casablanca. I am a size 2 in any street clothes.
So the Casablanca size chart is
Size 6: 35 26 37
Size 8: 36 27 38
And street size clothing examples
Size 2: 34 26.5 37
Size 2: 32.5 25 36
Size 2: 33.5 25 36.5
Size 2: 32 25.5 36
It doesnt seem like any of the size 2 measurements fit into the size 8. If it would make you feel better – got back and get measured again, maybe by someone else in the store? I personally like to blame stuff on myself like “I know I’m probably a little nuts, but would you mind remeasuring me? I’m sure I did something wrong but I came up with numbers that were significantly different and it would just make me feel so much better if you could remeasure :)”

@dontstopbeelievin: I think you should be fine, and worst comes to worst it’s easier to take a dress in than to let it out!

An 8 will be just fine! Like others are saying, it’s much easier to take a dress in than add material!

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I got my dress at Kleinfeld – it’s a Lazaro. The woman who measured me first said she was going to order a size 6, then came back and said to order a size 8. I have wide hips and am pretty small everywhere else. I wear a street size 0. And since I ordered the dress, I’ve lost 6 pounds. I’m thinking that it’s going to have to be taken in quite a bit. But they do it all of the time. Some brides lose tons of weight after they buy the dress.
