I know this may sound crazy, but my fiance and I really don’t care what the members of our wedding party wear for the wedding. We’re going to give them some broad guidelines (groomsmen wear dark suits, hopefully ones they already own; bridesmaids wear dark purple dresses – we’re not overly concerned with the exact shade), but then leave them to wear whatever they feel good wearing.
We’re fortunate that our friends and family are generally supportive of our wedding decisions, but when we tell people of this particular plan, they look at us like we have three heads. Is this really that crazy of an idea? I agree that wedding pictures look great when everyone wears the same dresses/ tuxes, but I think they can ALSO look great when everyone wears something similar but not the same.
I know we can’t be the only ones who are letting our groomsmen and bridesmaids choose their own attire so I’m hoping those of you in our same boat can give us some advice.
First, if you’ve done this, I’m wondering if you might have some pictures you wouldn’t mind sharing. I’d love to see what your wedding party looked like when everyone was all dressed up! (We’re especially interested in pictures of groomsmen wearing mismatched suits, although we’d love to see the whole wedding party, too.)
Second, will it look weird if our groomsmen don’t have the same color suits? What if they’re pretty close but not exact? OR what if they’re not AT ALL the same color?
Finally, does anyone have any general advice about how to pull this off? We thought asking our wedding party to choose their own attire would make things easier for everyone… am I wrong here?
Thanks SO much in advance!! 🙂

Our groomsmen wore their own black suits and we asked them to purchase their ties from Joseph A Bank

When my sister got married all she asked was that we wear red dresses. However, a bunch of us felt strange with the request. How would we make sure that we all chose dresses at the same level of sophistication? As a group the bridal party decided that we would pick a designer and a type of fabric and then each one could chose the style we wanted. We were size 0 – 24 so it actually really worked for us.
However a bride I know has this pic in her inspiration board and it looks great and is a little more less sophisticated. I think the parasols are great in this too 🙂 They carried these instead of flowers.

I should get the disc soon to post the actual picture but my man of honor and his two best men wore whatever suits they had. Three were pinstripe (two black, one gray) and one was solid black). I think it looked great and I loved that they didn’t have to rent/pay anything! Here are a couple of pictures

@mwitter80: Totally random…but I have the 3rd dress from the left hanging in my closet right now…lol. Now I know it’s appropriate for weddings

You’re definitely not crazy 🙂 We’re doing the same thing – guys are wearing black suits, since that’s the only thing 2 of the 3 had. We asked for white shirts (since that was pretty easy to get if they didn’t have) and we’re buying them ties and socks. They’ll wear whatever black shoes they all have.
For my girls, I just said something aqua-y. One bought a David’s dress off Ebay that is the ‘right’ color, the other 2 have dresses of their own that should work. And I don’t care what shoes they wear.
Originally I wanted my groom in a Khaki suit, but he definitely didn’t feel comfortable in that or gray which was my 2nd choice… so black it is. He did ask for a new suit, tie and shoes for the day though. 🙂

I’m so glad you posted this! I had been wondering if it would look strange just to have the groomsmen just wear their own black suits. Apparently, they do all kind of look alike.

We are thinking about doing this as well.
Allowing our bridal party to wear their own clothes so long as they have similar colors. I just feel bridesmaids gowns can be really expensive and then they are never worn again, I’d rather they wear dresses they can re-use. I love the picture above with the green dresses and the parasols. Really beautiful picture.

Our guys all wore their own black suit and shirts. We provided matching ties. We had the girls’ dresses made in different colors:

I’m really glad I’m not crazy 🙂 Thanks so much for all the advice. And the pictures are all so awesome. If you didn’t tell me, I’d have no idea that the suits weren’t all exactly the same!

One of my favorite looks 🙂

@PitBulLover: Did you notice anything funny in pics that made the differences in the suits stand out in a bad way?
