So I’ve always been very interested in doing pilates. I am not very flexible, and having a good core is useful at my job, so I finally decided to take the plunge and go to a mat pilates class. I’d love to do reformer classes, but those are too expensive!
Anyway, I went for the first time today and I didn’t really like it. It seems pretty much just like more intense yoga for me, without as much breathing exercises. I’ve been to yoga before, and didn’t much care for it.
In this class today, we did poses like warrior pose, and sun salutation and lots of downward facing dog and plank. Maybe I’m just wrong here, but I thought pilates was going to be different than yoga?
Have any of you bees ever taken pilates? What was it like for you? Should I suck it up and shell out the money for “real” pilates classes at a studio? (I’m taking them now at my local gym). Help!

that sounds more like vinyasa yoga.
Why don’t you try some videos from the library. I have done some good ones and not good ones.
Pilates is more about strength than yoga, but its certainly not as intense as other exercises. I think they all have a place in a routine, but I wouldnt do only yoga or pilates.

I find these classes to be so dependent on the instructor. I’ve been to yawn-inducing classes and I’ve been to classes that kick my butt. So I’d give it another shot and hope for a different trainer before ruling it out. I also know that I like to sweat when I work out, so basic yoga classes don’t do much for me. I’ve found that piyo/yogalates/bikram yoga are better suited for me since they’re about sweating and heart pumping instead of calm and relaxation. Just my two cents!

Yeah, that doesn’t sound like Pilates at all. I recommend both for flexibilty and strength but I much prefer yoga (like the “pilates” class you took:) Check out some other studios because you shouldn’t be doing anything like down dog or sun salutations, even in a so-called mat class.

Thanks for your input ladies! I will try a different instructor and see how that goes. Otherwise I might just go back to my spin/body pump/elliptical routine…
