With 46 days to go, I have projects piling up around me…not least of which is to finish the seating chart and make place cards. My concern is that if I simply make typical folded paper place cards (which i love), no matter what weight of paper, they will blow off of the table at our entirely-outdoor reception if there is any hint of a breeze. How can I weigh them down, in a cute but also inexpensive way, to prevent this from happening? Our original thought was to attach them to bubble bottles (double as “favors”), but the more I think about it, the less I want to use bubbles because they aren’t going to show up particularly well at a send off at 9:30PM…

EDIT: I suppose the correct term is escort cards. Sorry. Even so, still need a way to weigh them down.

rachelEK: What about something like a picture holder? That could double and I think you can get some relatively inexpensively

I ordered lovely laser cut butterfly place cards from Amazon, you write the name on the card and place the butterfly on the rim of a wine glass, so they won’t blow away! There are loads on Amazon in all different colours, very cheap too!

I bought moss cobbles (http://www.jamaligarden.com/productdetail/23293/88/dry-and-natural/set-of-35-small-flocked-moss-cobbles.php) and cut slits into them. I placed the paper escort cards directly into them. It took no time at all! I saw it on Martha Stewart a few years ago… It would be great for an outdoor wedding (and inexpensive!)

I like the idea of the moss rocks, you can also use little bottles of wine, soda, or even candy by glueing toothpicks onto the placecards and sticking them in whatever you’d like.

I used a really heavy card stock (http://www.paperandmore.com/product/3405/8-1-2-x-11-blueprint-blue-metallic-cardstock-111lb-cover) and made tented cards and had no issues with them blowing around in the breeze.

What about something like this?

rachelEK: I find that those little place card holders can end up being $$$.. Try doing a giant poster (like PP mentioned) for guests to view as they walk into the reception. You can reiterate this by leaving a framed note on the table also with the list of people at each table.

rachelEK: I’m not sure if you want alternative ideas to the traditional folded card, or just a way to weigh them down.
Given your fall wedding and your colors, you could use crab apples as escort cards if you have access where you live. Most crab apples have a lot more burgundy color to them than this pic.
you could also spray paint those mini pumpkins

If you just want to weigh down a traditional folded card, you could make little pumplins from orange glass vase gems and glue one of those on to each card.
You could draw the lines of a pumpkin shape with a fine point sharpie (or do a jack o lantern face if you prefer). Attach a green stem or not.
Alternatively, you could do the same thing with burgundy vase gems, no sharpie, add a stem and you have an apple.
You can get a bag of 100 vase gems for about $6.
