My husband and I recently had the idea to start a family tradition of a once-a-year family festival. This year it will just be with his side to see how it goes. Including ourselves that will be 13 people. Very small. We want it to be really fun… starting around noon with lunch and going through 8 pm. We are going to do games, activities, competitions, superlative awards, dessert contests, etc.
We live across from a high school so the possibility of baseball game or a lot of space is definitly there.
We want to have enough going on that this is fun but we also don’t want to spend a ton of money. Any suggestions for decor, themes, activities, etc. would be much appreciated!
If you have had a family event like this, what made it really special? What would you do differently?

I love volleyball. Any family party we go to I always hope they have a net set up for it 🙂

Oh, we didn’t think of that. That is a really great idea. Volleyball or Badminton is pretty inexpensive, too. We are going to do early June sometime…
We are also thinking to send invitations, create a blogspot for them to check out, do a banner and baloons on the front porch, pay a friend to take pictures throughout, and possibly even get tshirts made.
Everying on my hubbies side of the family has different last names because his mother married twice and his sisters are married with kids. So we were thinking to combine all 4 last names and make that the name of the festival. What do you think?

@BumbleReed: Sounds like fun! We know a few families who do similar things, T-shirts and all. What’s the age range that you’re looking at? Kid friendly games or just adults to work with? Any Minute to Win It games are fun and easy to recreate on the cheap. Leads to hilarity, especially if there is alcohol beforehand and people’s reflexes are slower.

All age ranges.
2 in their seventies, 1 in fifties, 4 in early thirties, 3 in mid twenties, 1 ten year old, 2 five year olds. So we are all over the place.
So far we thought of everyone having to draw out of a hat to have a partner (I will judge/time events so that leave 6 teams of 2) and they will have to compete for best time in an obsticale course… not sure on the format but it would include running with eggs on spoons, popping a balloon with their butt, sack racing, and runing with their legs tied together with a small rope.
His family has never done anything like this and I think it will be a great time to just enjoy each other. During dinner we were going to pass around a box and each person has to draw and answer a question… not too personal but it would be fun. Things like “what is something you have never done and want to do?” etc.
