I’m wondering how much planning for childcare I should do before trying to concieve. Should I research the price of daycare in the area and make sure it will work with my budget? Should I talk to my recently retired mother-in-law to see if she will watch the baby sometimes? (I hesitate here because I don’t really want her to know we’re trying until we announce a pregnancy.) Should my husband arrange his work schedule to complement mine? Should he talk to his boss about that before we’re even pregnant?
Or am I getting ahead of myself and all of these things can be taken care of during the months of pregnancy, if not during maternity leave?
It will not be feasible for our family for me not to work. I am the primary breadwinner and provide our health insurance. Right now, my husband has 2 jobs, both part time. One is pretty much 8-4 on weekdays, just barely below full time, but that job will be over in December. The other is evenings and weekends, in retail. I kind of imagine that he might be able to schedule himself to be home with the baby while I’m at work, then we can hand off and I’ll care for it in the evenings. Of course, we don’t want him to be at that job forever, though!
Am I right to worry about this now, or should I put thinking about this off for a while? What have you all done?
