mrsclaymls :  is there one person in the group you’d feel comfortable telling? You can loop them in and have them swap out your drinks. Or order something that looks similar to an alcoholic drink, IE a sprite with a lime or something along those lines.

Or, order an alcoholic drink and take pretend sips and dump in the bathroom.

Go the mocktail route. I know some people suggest saying you’re on antibiotics but since that’s a common go to, it’s very often as much of a giveaway as not drinking at all.

Congratulations!! If you’re going out to eat, after you’re seated you could get up to “go to the restroom” and tell the staff that you are pregnant but don’t want anyone to know, so when you order “a vodka soda” or a “beer” to please make it a soda or a non-alcoholic beer. Tell them they can charge you for the alcoholic version and I bet they won’t mind.

I wouldn’t suggest trying to come up with a lie about why you aren’t drinking… A baby obsessed mother in law (I have one too! Lol) will see through that in a second. Only way to trick her is to make her think you’re drinking and not let on that anything is different.

Congratulations!!  My go-to excuse for not drinking is that I have a NASTY UTI, and I don’t want it to mess with my antibiotics.

ttw16 :  I did this quite a few times. It’s a bit hard to manage but most severs have seen it plenty of times before! On the way to the bathroom just stop them and ask them for a club soda with al lime as a vodka soda, or a diet coke with a lime as a rum and coke. They can put it in the cocktail glass with the lime & cocktail straw! Just be sure to not down it in 2 sips like soda and to pace yourself / act buzzed.

Also like the idea of telling someone close to you to help you out if that person can keep a secret!

temeculabride :  i figured I was just being crabby but it just seemed like a lot to put on the staff, to pretend to make an alcoholic drink that doesn’t have alcohol in it. But I’m a nervous person and wouldn’t trust that they remembered

Op I think beevincent18 :  has a good alternative, having a friend somehow swap drinks instead of the staff, or order something right at the bar that looks like a cocktail as pp suggests

and congrats!!

Sansa85 : I sorta see your point but 1) not to sound bad but they are service staff and that is their job to take requests, I am sure they have had stranger requests before, 2) I always tipped like a good amount extra and 3) I paid for the alcohol version so it showed on the receipt in case anyone saw which is way more $ than a soda. I suppose it would be hard to trust but one small sip / just a drop and you’d be able to taste it and that wouldn’t be enough to harm the baby if there was an issue. It’s no different in terms of effort for them than to just make a well drink – they just make it a virgin drink and get paid and tipped for a real drink. I’ve been out with Mormon friends who don’t drink but want a fun foofoo drink and just ordered like a virgin pina colada… same thing you’re just asking away from your group rather than in front of everyone.

mrsclaymls :  Maybe it’s just a very faint second line but I don’t see it…? But then again I’ve never had a positive pregnancy test.

There was someone on here recently who said she tried to get the servers to make hers without alcohol secretly and when they served it they let it slip by announcing hers was the virgin one. So do be careful! Sometimes the person who takes the order isnt the one who delivers the drinks.

I think ordering your drink at the bar yourself or getting a friend to swap them is the safest thing to do!
