I will try and keep this short and sweet. We are both in our 30s. I have pre teens from a previous marriage. It is important to us to have the kids be there to see us get married. We have planned to have a court house ceremony with our parents and the kids present and then would like to have a symbolic ceremony just the two if us somewhere tropical and beautiful. Then a casual dinner party for all of close friends and family when we get back. Neither of us have traveled much so I am a little overwhelmed at where to even begin. We had both originally really wanted to go to Greece but I worry the transfer from dollars to euros is going to cost a fortune. Ideally Id like to keep this trip under $6k. We are thinking anywhere from 7 to 14 days. Not sure if Greece is doable at that price point. Any advice on where to start first or recommendations for places to start looking at? We have also talked about the Bahamas, a friend recommended St. Thomas… I love the idea of beautiful beach and sun but hes an art history major so I know somewhere with some history to tour is important to him.

Cartagena is very budget friendly and beautiful with lots of history to tour.

I agree with the bee above that Cartagena – and Colombia in general is gorgeous and affordable. Same with Mexico. Croatia is one of the most suprisingly affordable and gorgeous places in Europe. Portugal is more than doable at that price range and has a ton of stunning historical sites/art/architecture.

Greece isn’t that expensive to begin with. I stayed there for a couple of 100€ (Flight included but that was a inner European flight which was like 140€ round trip). I believe you could stay weeks and weeks with a budget of 5k (assuming 1k goes toward the flights) The easiest way is to pay with your CC and get cash from an ATM. You pay your flight and hotel in $ anyhow. Go to Greece if that’s what you want.
I’d make a list of your top 5 choices and then look into prices. If you can avoid the main US traveling season as prices for flights double (I usually fly to Europe a couple of times per year for about 420€ (Round Trip) and during the summer months the price literally doubles).
Personally I don’t find Greece that “romantic”. It’s beautiful and interesting but you need to keep moving to see it all. Do you want tropical beach beauty and relaxation or tourism and sightseeing? Or both? If you just want the beach it’s maybe easier and cheaper to go to a tropical island as some here suggested.
