We were engaged 6 and a half months, and I started planning in earnest (as in, booking vendors) about two weeks after we were engaged. I had a strong idea of what I wanted pur wedding to look like even before he proposed, and that helped a lot.

In Nashville, there seemed to be less competition for good vendors, so planning was relatively stress free. In a bigger city, we might have had more problems booking things just 6 months in advance. We booked our major vendors (photographer, caterer, rentals, and officiant) about 6 months before the wedding, got dresses 5 months befpre the wedding, and then just worked on diy and decor until about a month before the wedding.

We held our wedding at my parents’ lake house, so we didn’t have to compete with other couples for our venue. πŸ™‚

Good luck to you!

We’ve been engaged since May and haven’t really planned anything yet. We haven’t picked a date or location (debating between having it in AZ or CT still) either. I’m starting to worry a little bit about it because I’d like to be married Fall 2014 or Spring 2015 and time seems to be flying by! I just have no idea what I’m doing so I’m feeling overwhelmed about planning.

@realtreegal:  I just got so excited to hear this! Fiance and I just moved here from CT this past July when he got a job in the Phoenix area. I’d love to have my wedding here but all the family and friends we have are in CT. I think we still might end up choosing AZ though. Hoping to start looking at venues here soon πŸ™‚

Lets see we got engaged in Feb. I didn’t want to trurn into bridescilla and wanted to enjoy being engaged for a little bit.

I think the first thing we did was have the discussion of when to get married which was easy since I’m a teacher and we wanted a honeymoon right afterwards we decided on summer, after that we elminated June (just too busy with too many birthdays in our family). Which left July or August. Mayish?

from there we waited until we had a budget in mind, Researched venues…by process of elmination (what we could afford, what we wanted) narrowed it down to two venues….A) my dream venue, and B) an affordable one that had everything we were looking for, and toured them both in June?

From there we decided on which one to go with…went with B) as much as we loved A) we weren’t willing to compremise on getting married on a weekend or narrowing our guestlist.

June- I tried on dresses, and ordered mine.

July- We booked our preferred Photographer, and officant.

Sept- We sent our STD.

Oct-We booked our DJ, and I booked our hair saloon. We did DIY table numbers as well.

and This sunday we book our Florist

I know everything seems way early but we wanted to get our first choices, and get some of it done and out of the way, so I don’t have to worry about it.  But honestly I like the doing a little bit at a time instead of it all being at once. Since I work two jobs this works wonders for my stress level.

Engagement will be a year and half before we’re married.

Started planning almost a little over a year before wedding.

So far I love that we booked stuff earlier so we got our preferred choices, and so that its less stress later on.

@realtreegal:  I started planning on pinterest and getting ideas for what I looked pretty much as soon as I was engaged. We got engaged Christmas Eve 2012 and then I went to my first bridal show at the end of Janurary. Our wedding was October 5, 2013, and I didn’t start actually booking vendors and making decisions until March/April (my husband is in the military and was still doing trainings so we were waiting to confirm wedding date). I wouldn’t recommend doing this if you are picky, because vendors will fill up! The earlier you start the more likely you are to have your pick of venues, photographers, etc! πŸ™‚

We started planning right away. Even at 9 months out, our choice venue only had one weekend available in the late summer, and that was because someone cancelled. I wouldn’t wait too long to start looking at venues at least.

When did you start planning?

I cheated…I actually started planning before we “officially” got engaged.  We had already been together for 6 years at that point.  I think I should preface though that I am very much a planner!  On top of that, I am an accountant, so I had to make sure that we would have enough money saved up for all of the little things we want, so the budget was really important to me.

How long was your engagement?

Engagement is going to be a total of 20 months.  Less than 5 months to go! Yippee!

Anything you wish you had done sooner?

All of my DIY stuff.  Honestly, I still have enough time to get it all done, but I wish I would have just gotten a lot of it out of the way.  Although, I will add that my mind changed a million times, so it’s actually kind of good that I haven’t finished everything quite yet!

Anything you took care of too early and wish you had waited on?

Oops, I guess I kind of already answered this in the previous post.  But yes.  The main thing was buying decor way ahead of schedule.  I started purchasing items right from the get-go, and now I am stuck with a lot of things that I may not even use anymore.  I am going to try and incorporate them into the big day somehow (to prevent being wasteful), but if not, then I guess I will just try to sell them.

My personal opinion is that you can never start planning too early πŸ™‚

When did you start planning?

We are actually having a super long engagement. Got engaged in December 2011 and our wedding is October 2014. I started planning this past July 2013 for our November 2014 wedding. I have already booked almost all of my vendors except the cake and transportation. Living in such a big city makes it difficult becuase the good vendors get booked so quickly.

How long was your engagement?

It will be just shy of 3 years πŸ™‚

Anything you wish you had done sooner?

Nope. So far I have been able to book every single one of my first choice vendors!

Anything you took care of too early?

Maybe some of the little decoration things that I have impulse purchased rather than taking the time to decide if I really need them.

@realtreegal:  Don’t panic just yet, talk to your fiance, let him know things book quickly and that you need to start booking things (if you are financially ready) I didn’t pay for a wedding planner. I have been doing everything on my own. My decorator is taking care of the hall, there is an onsite co-ordinator of my facility to see that everything runs smoothly on the day of so I don’t “see” anything. Also I have been purchasing the small items along the way with extra money so it has helped quite a bit!  I would start looking at venues for sure. Make sure where you want is available on the day you want so you aren’t disappointed!!

ETA: We aren’t using any type of transportation as everything will be held at one venue and most of us will be there the night before so it works out!!

@realtreegal:  Haven’t looked at venues at all yet. Had no idea about the bridal show either, where is it? I’d love to go!

@realtreegal — Haha, most of my planning is in my head, too! I’ve been to a few venues and will probably book the one I really love soon but I’m waiting to talk more with their caterer first because they require you work with their food people. So I guess I haven’t locked anything in…but I feel like it’s all I think about! I need to get back to finishing my grad thesis! LOL

Don’t freak out! You’ve got time!

I didn’t do a full on planner because I’m just too damn cheap. But I did hire a day of coordinator and it was the best money I spent! It allowed me to actually enjoy my wedding day and she deal with pulling everything together on the wedding day!
