I think that this is for conveniance… I think you can do whatever you like though. Your guest will just have to stand in line with their plate the whole time.

Most definitely. Guests will know to take their plate with them. I would ask your venue/catering staff how that is typically handled.

I pretty sure ours will be on the table and I’ve seen this done before and it works fine!  If you like the look, go for it!

I think it will be fine – as long as you don’t mind guests holding them while in line or forgetting them and needing to go back to the table to get them.

oracle makes a good point. Maybe have extra plates at the buffet as well just in case?

My sister is having a buffet dinner at her reception as well and she wanted the plates to be on the tables b/c she likes how it looks. Other than having to hold the plates for a little longer, I don’t forsee any problems. As long as the food is good I doubt anybody will complain about having to carry their plate =)

We are also having a buffet and I was going to have the plates on the table, and the caterer will do this for us, but she also told me that they usually don’t do this because it is less sanitary than just having the plates at the buffet, so I may change my mind and just have the chargers on the tables with the napkins on them.

One way to eliminate this dreaded waiting with a plate problem? have the DJ/MC/cute cousin dismiss tables slowly enough that there isn’t a big pile up at the end of the buffet line. People will only have to hold an empty plate for a minute or two. This should happen anyway so I can’t understand why caterers make such a big deal about it.

I’m not sure yet if I’ll have them on the table or not.. but I’m probably going with having them on the buffet line and finding some sort of impressive napkin fold to take up more space between the knife and fork..

Do it. Personally, I love the look of a fully set table. Everyone will figure out to take their plates with them.

Most people are seated before the buffet so I don’t see any problem with it. Of course that will mean they’ll have to stand in line with their plates which I don’t think is that big of a deal.
