This story happened in the general area where I used to live. Fiance and I are Toronto natives, but we have relocated to Halifax for his job. My family and friends have been talking non-stop about this story and my mom said there were posters everywhere looking for this man.
The summary: Tim Bosma made an online ad to sell his truck. He went to meet the potential buyers and they not only stole his vehicle and confined him, they killed him and burned his body. Yes, this is an extreme case. But please be cautious if you are selling anything online.
I met my Fiance online, so I am not against online networking, meeting, or sales. I am just advocating safety, i.e. not going anywhere with potential buyers, meeting in public, not going alone, letting someone know where you are, etc.
I know this all sounds obvious but Tim was a grown man with a wife and 2 year old daughter. He was overpowered and lost his life. Online sales like this happen daily and people really need to think about their safety.

How scary! I’ve sold and bought a lot of stuff through Craigslist but never go alone or to a private location. Not worth it!

I’ve been reading about this story. So sad and so scary.
I sell stuff online quite a bit and I always meet them in a public place, usually a mall or grocery store parking lot and I always make sure that no one is following me when I leave. Maybe I’m just overly cautious! It’s for safety and also for privacy, I really don’t like people knowing too much about me.
It drives me INSANE when my guy will agree to have someone meet him at our house when he’s trying to sell something.

How sad, especially for that little girl who will have to grow up without her father.

What’s scary is that im wondering how this could have been prevented. It sounds like things went bad on the test drive…

This is my worst nightmare! Fiance is always selling and buying things on Craigslist, and I always tell him to meet them in public places, but he always just meets them at work and he works in an office with the secretary and him. It pisses me off. And the offices around him are always lonely. It’s the perfect place to do something like this should the other people want to. I will show this to him.

This happens really frequently nowadays, and it’s really sad. It happened to my former coworker:
Nicest guy ever. I have no idea if he ever woke up from the coma, but I know that even if he did, his life will never be the same.
All of this is so sad. If you have to sell something online and meet up with the buyer, bring someone with you – it may be overly cautious, but better to be overly cautious now than regret it later.

My Fiance lived in the Cambridge/Kitchener/Waterloo area before he moved to the US. Some of our friends posted this on FB right after it happened. Horrible!!
