@blingbling:  lol I agree. Why the need to go anon for this? Also, I was expecting a really dramatic story about a diamond falling out of a ring and rolling down into a city sewer hole or something like that.

@starla:  Me too! I was sure it was going to be a story about a ring down the toilet or disposal.

I’ve dropped mine several times and it’s just fine.

I’d think the best way to know nothing’s wrong with it is simply to look at it… Carefully…and also check if the diamond is loose in the setting at all, which would be much more likely… But in case her eyesight isn’t very good or she doesn’t know what to look for, I suggest she take it to a jeweler, any jeweler, who should be happy to verify that for her free-of-charge.

aww, sorry to hear. I have a high set engagement ring and I have had it many years–wear it daily. I am no shrinking violet lLOL, have hit it countless times and hard!

Likely there is no damage on your friends diamond. However to assuage her fears she should go to a jewelry store or even look at it herself with a loupe. 10x loupes can be bought at Harbor Freight for a few bucks.

good luck!

@blingbling:  +1000 I definitely don’t understand needing an anon friend for this.

If there isn’t damage to the prongs then I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say it’s fine. ESP since there are very few inclusions to leave room for a crack or chip. If she’s still freaking out then drive to get it inspected, it’ll be worth the drive just to relieve the worry.

yes, I’ve dropped my ring on a porcelain tile floor two times and it was fine. it has chips around the girdle + an inclusion, so the possibility of it breaking are higher than your friend’s ring. (note, the chips happened before I got the ring– it’s antique)

however, maybe she should not wear it until she can get it examined. even though we think it’s fine,  it would be worth the wait if she really is that nervous about it.

It’s bad but I bang my ring around all the time, diamonds are sturdy, they don’t break easily.

My ring has dropped, it’s practically punched a few walls, it’s been through a lot and is still in great shape. No worries, the diamond I’m sure is just fine.

Isn’t it insured? And what about the jewler? If its chipped most places will replace the diamond. If she’s that freaked out all she needs to do is get it inspected. Seems like this should be a non issue, IMO

Not going to get started on how clutzy I am.  Mine has been banged a bunch, especially when flinging the car door open/close with the edge of my hand and the ring takes the hit/transfer of energy; still in perfect condition.  Yes, I cringe but if shit happens, it happens. No material thing lasts forever – not your house, car, ring, job, etc.  And everything, from a Samurai’s 1000x folded-steel sword to gold to plat to diamonds to whatever will be chipped.  If you want something to not get grazed or chipped, then buy a bit of metal from Thor’s hammer and put a metal cage around your stones and then you’re golden.  Ugh.
