I’m not sure that I know any that fall in that budget… but there is the Branford House at Uconn at Avery point. It is REALLY beautiful.

Conn College is also really beautiful, but I’m not sure who they allow to use thier facility. It is worth checking into though.

Harkness Park

The Eugune O’Neil Theater

I’m not sure if you need a caterior too, but Gourmet Galley is really great. They are out of New London. http://www.gourmet-galley.com

Check places like the VFW, American Legion, Elks Hall, etc… being a Navy town, there should be a decent number to choose from.  And they’re cheap.  The ones that peacegrl099 mentioned are beautiful, but pricey… And if I’m reading your post correctly, this isn’t for the wedding itself, but for a pre-wedding shindig.  Good luck!

It is gorgeous!  Was our second choice, but we decided to have a smaller weddding – Branford House was going to be too big, I think.  We got married at the Mystic Arts Center – was gorgeous!

ps – I’ll keep my eyes open for likely places (I live in Waterford), and will PM you if I see something.

@misskhan724:

I’m getting married at the Branford House the week before you and face a similar dilemma, although I don’t need to seet as many people as you do. I looked at a number of restaurants including Go Fish and Latitude. I’m not sure if they would be willing to do something for up to 250, but Latitude has a large outdoor space that might be an option, except you can’t bring your own caterer. You really might need to look into putting up a tent somewhere with those numbers or possibly looking at options on New London.

is $4000 your budget for the rental fee or total budget for the function?  If it’s pre-wedding, Is it during the week? Any weekdays at almost any place will be much cheaper.. we had our wedding at Saltwater Farm vineyard in stonington that was gooorgeous and is drastically cheaper to rent on a weekday so that’d be my #1 rec. (not like i’m biased or anything hehe) Harkness park that peacegirl mentioned is also realllly nice.  Ocean Beach in New London has a large boardwalk area they might rent out?? I know they often hold concerts there.. it is in a really nice area of New london too.  Garde Arts center?

Hmm.  Is New Haven too far (~40min from Groton)?  Carousel pavillion at lighthouse point is gorgeous… not sure of the rental fee either though.. I’ll keep thinking!

Ocean Beach, like Sophie mentioned, does have a venue. It is inside and overlooks the water. I had a prom there. It was nice. It is a really big room that should fit and from what I hear isn’t to crazy of a price. I don’t believe that they let you have your own caterer through.
