    the only thing about family owned is if they close up shop, you have no waranty. Chain stores usually do not go bankrupt but you can never guarantee. family owned are usually better at working with u if you want any changes though!

    Small jeweler is the way to go in my opinion their work is usually better.

    I vote for custom; they usually offer better customer service but you run the risk of them closing up shop.

    You could ask the smaller jeweler if he could price match the other offer?

    My ring was custom made at an independent family jeweler and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The quality and craftsmanship is impeccable and I love the fact that I know it’s one of a kind!

    We went with a local jeweler that really really knew their stuff (better than all the other local jewelers in the area). The quality was excellent and since they were also cutters and whatnot, they also had a lot of stones in-house, vs having to ship them in for us. The customer service is great and it was fun and special having a ring that’s custom made for me only.

    However, I am also hesitant about the fact that you are not going to a local jewelry store but rather a jewelry exchange. We have some of those in our area and to be very candid, the quality of the stones and craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired. We peeked into one of them and for their prices, I would rather just get a moissy.

    Between a jewelry exchange and Ring Bearer, I would pick Ring Bearer. However, if you are talking about a smaller jewelry store with a lot of referrals online and reviews, then that would be a good option. For example, our jeweler is very active on social media and has A LOT of reviews on Yelp.

    I would go with the family owned store. Mine came from a local family run shop and the servide is so much better than you get at chain stores. They’re going to do whatever they can to keep you happy and might give you a deal if you tell them the price is a problem.

    @Katie1359:  +1

    I am with Katie1359 on this, my ring is also custom from a small family jeweler in the Twin Cities. When Mr. Xray first purchased a ring for me it was from a large “reputable” chain, well it ended up being a nightmare and 7 months of back and forth no ring and arguing and we had to threaten leagal action to finally return the ring. Thats when we found the family jeweler and hands down best expiriance I could even imagine. Even now when I walk by I like to stop in they remember my name clean my ring, make sure everything is 100% up to par that nothin is loose. The craftsmanship & expiriance themselves were well worth it and they were amazing at keeping in our budget. They tend to work with you more on the cost vs a big box chain who has to go thru so many chanels to negotiate a price.

    Another option you could try is asking the Jewlery Exchange to find a smaller center stone that will fit in your 3400 budget.

    I personally would put a lot of weight on the quality of guarantee/warranty your ring will have.  My ring is from a local chain store so it’s a bit of a cross between chain and family owned, but their guarantee is amazing. I don’t have to do regular ‘check ups’ ever, if I ever lose a stone it’s replaced for free (including center), free unlimitied maintenence (prong fixes, resizing, etc). So that might be another criteria you want to consider when making the choice.

    I love my robbins brothers ring. It is gorgus! plus they have been really easy to work with, cleaning, resizing, plus I broke a prong. They fix it fast and with good workmanship. They stand behind their product. I would go with them.
