2 ct. tw. could cost $6k easily. Do you know how big the center stone is? Do you have an example of what it looks like? Maybe the Helzberg photo.

Is the bank account a joint account or just his?

ETA: what is printed on the inside of the ring? Mine is printed with the type of metal and the place it came from.

Maybe you should let your friend and her fiance work this out on their own.

If she doesn’t trust him and he is acting this shady, I think they have bigger issues than her ring…

Why doesn’t your friend just ask her Fiance about the money and the cost of the ring? I’m not trying to be judgmental but worrying that he’s sneaking away money and looking for the price of a ring isn’t the best way to start a life together.

Also, I agree with @Aumuller: and @Lindsay12.31.2010:

If she thinks he’s being shady with money, there are bigger trust issues in the relationship than ring cost.

You also have to factor in the insurance, if applicable.  Mine was somewhere around 10% of the value of my ring, something like that.

@katelynk: Well this sounds like a bigger trust issue going on. If the money was from a joint account then he should willingly provide her with the details of the ring and it’s purchase (i.e. appraisal, receipt, GIA (or other) cert if there  is one, etc).

Could the setting be platinum? That could up the cost of the ring. Has she taken it to an independent appraiser to get it looked at?

I’m not sure that her mind can be eased.  She’s not going to find out that the ring is anywhere near 6k.  So the only real question is, where did the rest of that money go?

To be honest, if the ring isn’t a solid solitaire in the center, I doubt it was $6,000.  A lot of the cost of a ring goes toward the center stone, at least that’s what I think. The larger the stone, the more expensive.  The fact that the center stone is in fact 4 .25 carat stones leads me to believe it isn’t as expensive as he claims.

For example, look at this similar one from Zales.  It is only 1.5 carats, but is under $2,000….
