I desperately need help finding the right location and resort for our honeymoon in early September. I have been doing TONS of research on my own, and ever recruited a TA for the past two weeks or so, but there always seems to be a draw back. On top of the safety concerns in Mexico, and the Hurricane season in it’s peak in the Caribbean.
I’m sure there is a lot of travel experience on here, and hopefully lots of ladies willing to share their memories, pictures, and where to find the best deals!
We are hoping to find a Luxury resort, that has a room with terrace jacuzzi/or pool.
All Inclusive resort with at least average (hopefully better) food, and drinks.
We are leaning towards the adult only resorts, as the seem to have more of what were looking for as far as atmosphere.
Our leading choices are
1.) Excellence Playa Mujeres: Two story terrace suite
2.) Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana: Concierge level suite
Please Help Bees!

I’m not going to get into hurricane season but I just got back from our wedding/honeymoon in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and felt completely safe. We ventured out to the downtown area and did a few excursions and never felt threatened.

I went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica in August. It wasn’t September, but I was warned that it was the rainy season, etc. It was totally awesome, great weather, beautiful and sunny most of the time. It rained for one or two hours each afternoon, which was actually sort of refreshing.

What about going further away? Maybe Thailand? There aren’t as many all inclusives, but foods and drink is cheap! Look at Ko Samui.

All inclusive and adult only is a great option. Here’s some websites to help in your research:
allinclusiveoutlet.com; shermantravel.com; travelzoo.com; bookit.com
I’ve travelled in Sept and only had a day of rain. I would also check Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, and Antigua.
Not all of Mexico is a hotbed of crime. Several Bees have just honeymooned there and haven’t had any issues.

I will check out the allinclusiveoutlet, and search some more. We have been going back and forth between the Excellence, only because a few reviews have said that any activities outside the hotel may be inconvenient as the hotel is pretty remote. Which is good for romance, but not so good for hiking, ziplining, snorkeling, diving, etc. Thanks squeak35

Have you thought about Aruba? One of my good friends went there in September last year on her honeymoon and said it was amazing.

We are going to Ocho Rios in Jamaica as well – Couples San Souci (look at their website, they have other Jamaica locations as well) 8 nights, beachfront room that has a small balcony and a jacuzzi, all-inclusive, Couples (not just adults) only – for just under $4k. Get the insurance – if there were a hurricane, you are protected. FI’s Brother and wife actually had this happen on their honeymoon ~6 years ago, and the not only got have their original honeymoon (pushed back a couple weeks) they also got a free trip they used later. I believe they went to the Dominican Republic but I’m not positive on that.
Something else you can always do if you find the perfect place but you’re worried about the hurricane risk – delay the honeymoon to November when the season is pretty much over.

@yankees2056: We booked Excellence and we are also going early September. I was very anti-Mexico at first (not because of violence or anything, but because I had been there before with my fiance on our first solo vacation. I wanted to try something different. I spent weeks researching the caribbean, western mexico, etc. But all the other islands in the Caribbean just didn’t seem to offer the luxury we wanted at the price we wanted. For example, we could go to like a 3-star in Antigua or St Lucia that had like one restaurant, etc, for the same price as Excellence PM, which is a five star resort. I’ve been to Punta Cana before and for some reason, just really liked mexico better. We got travelers insurance in case of hurricane. I really cannot wait to go – weve heard such GREAT things about the resort. I’d say go with it!

i should also add that if you’re looking for stuff to do off the resort, mexico has better options IMO. Yes, EPM is a lot further away from that stuff. Really, without having a few hour drive, your options are Cancun or Isla Mujeres. But I’ve heard that people who stay at EPM don’t really want to leave the resort and regret it when they do because they feel they missed out. We plan to stay on the resort most of the time, except for maybe one half-day snorkeling trip and a day trip to Isla Mujeres. So, if the excursions are what you’re looking for, try further down in Riviera Maya (we stayed there last time). There’s another Excellence Resort there so you are closer to all the action. Secrets Maroma is also a top contender when compared to Excellence. We priced that trip out as well and for a swim out suite at either Secrets or Excellnce, it was about or under $4,000. Good luck in your research, but book soon! You are getting close!!

I would not recommend the Hard Rock in Punta Cana. I stayed there last November.
The Riviera Maya region of Mexico offers dozens of fantastic all inclusive, adult only resorts. While safety is of concern in the border towns, the Riviera Maya offers a safe, fantastic experience. We have an agent there now touring several hotels before taking some time off at one of the Karisma Resorts.
If you’re super concerned about hurricanes, try Aruba.

September is a bit tricky because it is hurricane season for most of the carribean. You could get lucky and you can definitely strike a great deal at that time, however, it really is a gamble. I would reccomend checking out aruba since it is out of the hurricane zone. I have never been there but I have heard nothing but wonderfull things. There are some all inclusive resorts there as well. I am not sure about adults only but definitely worth checking out. Good luck!

My husband and I honeymooned in Puerto Vallarta last September! It was PERFECT and safe from the hurricane season. We booked through http://www.cheapcaribbean.com and stayed at the Dreams Puerto Vallarta. We went off the resort to the Malecon/downtown area, did a number of excursions and never felt unsafe.
The weather was 90* and perfect every day. It did rain at night twice, but that got us $100 off our next trip with the sunshine guarantee through Cheap Caribbean.
We were there 11 days, and paid $2600 all inclusive for the honeymoon including flights. HIGHLY recommend! We loved it so much we’re going back for our anniversary!

I would look into Aruba. Out of the hurricane belt and safe.

Thanks ladies, I have checked tons of sites and destinations out and feeling more secure about traveling during hurricane season. Booking with travel insurance was pricing out about $100 a person, and if there were to be a warning (which usually are issued 36 hours in advance) trip could be canceled, and another could be booked. Worst case scenario, but if so we would still be able to grab a great deal as last minute specials would be available.
After literally looking at what seemed like every resort that is beach front, we keep coming back to the Excellence PM. We just fell in love with the roof top terrace with rain pool, and day bed that is secluded enough, but also offers 24 room service. (Even a private entrance for staff on terrace level!) Imagine enjoying your own private pool, ordering drinks and food via room service (from 5 star restaurants I might add) and it all being all inclusive! On top of that the hammocks, laying over one of the resorts pools and swim up bar might intise us out of our room a time or two 🙂
We considered Punta Cana, both Hard Rock and another Excellence, for the though of having a casino, believe it or not we would probably visit it as we spend out birthdays at a casino here in Colorado. After seeing the difference, in room quality, and hearing the food tends not to be as good as Mexico, we again headed back to Excellence PM.
So after speaking with Travel Agent, and learning about the 0% fee for Honeymoon registry we are SOLD! We can not wait for September to come, and retroindigo looks like we’ll see you there 🙂
