Okay Okay I know that this is a disgusting habit and many of you cringe just thinking about, but I am a serious nail biter!
Lately, it has gotten worse (wedding/family stress?) and I just cannot stop myself from biting all of my nails off. It’s been getting worse and worse and I actaully have a couple of fingers that hurt because my nail is so short. It never used to be like this but I find myself deep in thought or stressing and…bang…my hands are in my mouth and I don’t even notice! I just can’t stop!! It must be the stress of being busy, worn out, and stretched thin.
I’m a tidy person and I’m always keeping myself looking neat, but because of this my hands don’t look that great. I need to kick this habit fast because I want presentable hands for the wedding (and not to mention I am constantly filling my mouth with bacteria). Do any of you bees have suggestions on how to stop? I’ll try anything!
P.S. I should note that getting gel/acrylic nails isn’t really in the budget to maintain right now!

I know a few friends who have kept their nails painted and it helps curb the biting. I’d suggest Bitter Apple, like we use to keep our dog from chewing things, but then you really couldn’t touch much.
My husband chews his nails, pens, etc and very little has been effective. If he notices the urge to chew, he’ll grab some gum and that helps a lot. But the noticing part is the toughest. Maybe just keep gum on you at all times and pop some in at first bite?

I was/am a terrible nail biter. Been doing it since I was 7 years old.
The ONLY way I can help grow them is by keeping them nicely manicured in a neutral (skin tone) color.
Something dark enough to hide any dirt that my be under the nails (when they start to grow) but something that blends in enough so that bubbles/chips aren’t noticeable.
Since my Fiance proposed over labor day, I’ve been getting manicures weekly (plase near me does $8 manicures) and my nails have been growing. My motivaction right now is that people are looking at my hands (to see the ring) and I don’t want bloody fingernails.
Look at those wedding pictures of peoples hands with their rings or just a close up of hands holding the bouquet. Use those as inspiration for nice nails on your wedding day.
As for acrylic nails, they can actually weaken the underlying nail so when they are taken off your nails break easily.

Hmm I think I am going to have to keep up with the nail painting because that has honestly been the only thing that semi-helps. I was hoping to find some “miracle” product, but that hasn’t happened… lol.

There’s a clear “stop bite” stuff that they sell here in the UK. It looks just like clear polish but it tastes disgusting in case you decide to put it in your mouth. I think they say it takes around 6 months to actually break the habit though!

@mrs.peters.to.be: It’s the ONLY thing that has worked for me. I also have them put nailtiques on the nails to strenghten them. I have tried all the “no bite’ products and I manage to “like” the taste of it.
Also, I have to be dilligent to repain the nails within a day if the polish starts coming off, because I will pick/bite all the polish off and then my nails are next to go!

i have always bit my nails, i got fakes a couple times and evn chewed on those..it’s yuk and sad too! i just wanted to bite them off. so, i may not get my nails done..if i do,they won’t be long at all..really really long ones are gross. you get food under there..and they curve over and look like halloween nails.

Chew gum all the time. And keep your nails filed and painted with a nude/clear color!

I’ve tried keeping manicures so many times to stop biting, but that has never worked. I swear by Mavala No-Bite…it’s the only bitter polish I can’t stand!

oh and definitely keep a nail file with you at all times! That way you can fix the nail before you feel the need to bite it!

Where can you find Mavala No-Bite?

My fiance is a nail biter. I make him wear gloves.

Ok there’s these bandaid like strips that you can put on your fingers…I think my mom used them to get my sister to stop sucking her thumb.
Here’s how I keep from biting my nails…Think of everything you do in a day… all the door knobs you touch, face keyboard, pets and all the stuff you do throughout the day cooking, cleaning, gardening…pottying (yeah I went there) Imagine that under your nails, and being in or around your mouth…
Ok I’m off to go use some purell….

I was a nail biter for 18 years and I tried everything. I know you said it wasn’t in the budget, but I got wraps for prom. They last 4 weeks with no maintenance and I was broken of the habit when they came off. My nails underneath were fine (the nails came off when they were ready without being forced) and I really rarely bite anymore, over 7 years strong!

Like KatNYC2011 the ONLY thing that works for me is having polished nails. Polish comes off, I bite my nails. I go to a little place that’s only $10 for a manicure once a week, or you could always DIY polish at home!
