Just because you are on assistance doesn’t mean you should have to live like an animal and take no pride in yourself. I have had to have assistance until Fiance and I got on our feet and I had someone tell me recently that I was “what is wrong with this country” because I was painting my house when I couldn’t afford to feed myself (my grandparents paid for my paint and the people who lived here prior to us absolutely trashed the place).

Think before you judge.

Nobody is going to outshine you on your wedding day no matter how they look.

I really don’t think she is trying to show you up at your own wedding.  It’s an important day for her too, her son is getting married, and she will be seeing lots of friends and family and taking lots of pictures.  If she is putting extra money into making an effort to look nice at your wedding it must be special to her too, you should take it as a compliment. Plus, a tan and fake eyelashes don’t have to be expensive, unless she is getting the pricey stuff?

I believe maintaining your home is a legitimate use of funds. No one expects anyone to live like an animal, but tanning, fake nails and eyelashes are definitly unnecessary luxuries.

 But!

The wedding is only one day and your Mother-In-Law may want to feel good/special about herself. If she’s doing these things all the time, that’s a problem. I’d let it slide for the wedding 🙂

I think you are over reacting.  So what if she wants to tan and fake eye lashes.  No one is going to really care but you it seems. Let her be.

Actually alot of ladies wear fake eyelashes on a daily basis, my sister for example. I htink you are putting too much emphasize on a pair of fake eyelashes, maybe you should focus on your wedding, and you new marriage to be instead.

I agree it really isn’t your concern how she spends her money, it is her money. I really would not worry about it.

@xshellx2003: I get what you are saying, I think its about priorities. My Future Mother-In-Law has asked us for a lot of money in the past to catch up on bills. More than once. Yet she just bought a new car, and gets her nails done all the time.
