SO, I have been to Panama and Thailand. Haven’t been to Fiji but know a lot of people who have/know a lot about it.

The major thing will be timing. You absolutely, positively do NOT want to schedule your wedding during the rainy season of any of those places (which would be the “low” season). The wet season in Fiji isn’t quite as big a deal as in Thailand (we were there this past year with the worst flooding in 50 years shutting down almost the entire country), but, you want to make sure that the timing of your wedding can be flexible to avoid, say, an afternoon thundershower. Also look into a refund policy/travel and wedding insurance in case there is a typhoon that would cause cancelation of the trip.

Another way to save money in Thailand would be to have your wedding on pretty much any other island besides Phuket. Phuket is a giant tourist trap – it’s like the Cancun of Thailand. There are some quieter parts of the island, but I would really recommend doing the wedding/staying on one of the less populated islands. It’s easy enough to grab ferries between the islands for guests who want to travel around, but you save $$$ by not staying on Phuket proper. Plus, the beaches are just as dramatic and beautiful, and they are way less crowded!

Hi, we are getting married on phuket in april 2013, there is a huge range of hotels to stay in, actually we did consider getting married on a smaller island but in the end Phuket was cheaper for accomodation.  You can also go on a shoulder season or off peak.  A lot of people still have weddings in phuket even in rainy season as it usually only rains for a short period of time then straight back to sun, peak times are usually november to march.

Fiji aslo has had a lot of flooding recently (have friends who were trapped in resorts there) and of course a lot of political problems with the coup & trade restrictions imposed because of the govt regime.  However, the Fijian people are lovely and its not their fault about the govt.  Guess it depends on how many hours & cost the flight is to Fiji for you, compared with going to Phuket.

Off season for fiji as you probably know is dec till feb, this is hurricane season but its not always like that.

@thelawwon:  yes our main summer holidays in NZ combined with christmas are dec till feb.  Peak season for travel to fiji from NZ is July to Sept as this is during our winter/ some school holidays when a lot of people holiday in Islands.  But flights are often dearer for us in Dec/Jan but weather is wetter there during this time.  This website has some handy info http://www.smartertravel.com/travel-guides/page.php?id=317337

We are going to get married at Laguna Chapel in Bang Tao beach in Phuket, the laguna chapel has its own wedding coordinators who are fabulous!  The laguna resort has about 6 different hotels to choose from.  I also recommend staying at Peach Hill Resort in Kata beach either before or after the wedding, it is closer to come markets, although I havent been there for 10 years but pictures look the same on internet :-).

My first choice, personally, would be Fiji, but that’s probably the most pricey.  More realistic would be Phuket, though honestly, I didn’t love Phuket.  I did love some of the islands you can take a ferry to from there, like Phi Phi island – highly recommended.

Phi Phi island is lovely.  We are doing a day trip there again when we go with all our guests.

I <3 Bocas!!! My friend Monique owns/runs the eco lodge Tesoro Escondido on the Bluff and she’s had several eco weddings there. They also have delicious food. You should email her and see what she can do for you guys. I know they have a good package for 25 people starting at $5k…if I remember correctly, not sure how much lodging is involved.
