    Round

    Cushion

    I love both, equally.

I think both look lovely but I went for a cushion as I wanted something a bit different and with an antique feel. Mine is an old mine cushion from ca 1860 and it has the most amazing chunky sparkle which I love. It faces up smaller as pp has said but at the size you are looking at it will give you enough coverage in my opinion. Mine is 2.5ct on a 5.5 finger for reference.

I love the look of cushions, but I couldn’t get over the fact that most don’t sparkle as much as RB and face up smaller. Also, I think the extra sparkle of RB can help camouflage inclusions and warmer color, which can help you either save money or get a larger stone in your price range. I went with RB, and that would still be my vote now. I say get the largest center stone you can without going over your budget or sacrificing quality to the point it’s “ugly” (what is/isn’t ugly is very subjective/personal). As far as the width of the setting/band, I would get the thinnest you can find that you like the style. Personally, 2.5mm was my absolute max, and that would have been lower if I was looking at smaller center stones. I think thin bands look best, and they make the center stone look larger. Here is my 3.06ct with 2.2mm band and setting on a size 5.5:

Before making any of those decisions, do you have a budget in mind for your ring?  That will affect the size of the diamond you can afford.  As far as sparkle and size goes, it all also depends on what kind of cut and quality you get.

@suprsweet:  Modified CB are very common and usually the ones you see. In My Humble Opinion, I think the modified do not sparkle as much (or as well) as a cushion brilliant because of the crushed ice look. It looks slightly haphazard versus the clear, faceted sparkle from round, which is what the cushion brilliant will give you, but with a cushioned shape. IF you can get a cushion brilliant with hearts & arrows, it is very sparkly and gorgeous IMO (partially because I have one – LOL). Rounds also come with hearts & arrows. Here’s information on squared hearts & arrows (cushion brilliant): http://www.goodoldgold.com/ShapeTutorials/Square_Hearts_and_Arrows/. See how gorgeous the first picture of the diamond on this page is!

I have a 1.21 carat cushion modified brilliant. My ring is sized at a 6 to fit over my knuckle, but the part where it sits is really about a 5.25/5.5:

1.04 ct round diamond on size 5 finger

Fiance picked my round stone but I would have been equally happy with a cushion.  They’re absolutely gorgeous!  I have a size 5 finger and am happy with my 1 carat but I also have a halo which provides slightly more finger coverage.  I don’t think that 1 carat looks small on your finger at all!  Also I’m a fan of thin diamond bands because they make the center stone pop more.

I’m totally shocked by the poll results thus far. I feel like everyone loves rounds so much more, but I’m a cushion girls myself. They’re not apples to apples, obviously, but yeah, cushion all the way for me. I’m also going to be getting an antique cushion (at least that’s the plan for now) because I adore their chunky sparkle and the availability of warmer colors. Good luck!
