andielovesj:  You have a point. It’s not so much an iron clad “rule” as it is a recommendation to invite by category or else risk offending. Since the mandatory list includes those  married, engaged, or living together, one would normally choose between inviting everyone over 18 with a guest or only those in social units. Guests of immediate family don’t really count since they are guests in their own right. Beyond that, discriminate at your own risk. 

But I disagree with those who say no guest will know if there’s  inconsistency. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve chatted with someone at a wedding and been asked how I know the couple.

weddingmaven:  oh me too. But if I’m at a wedding and hear oh your Marge, bride Sally talks about going out with you and precious little Damien all the time.  I wouldn’t need to wonder why my kid she’s meet once isn’t invited. 

But this dies get trickier when people start inviting people they aren’t close with.
