all I can say is that corset back dresses are your friend. They suck you in where you want them to, and flare out where you want them to. I am very much an apple shaped girl, but some corset backed dresses did amazing things to my figure. I am also a fan of the V-neck. Private Label by G, Signature Plus collection is particularly flattering to our fuller figures. You might look into them.

if you are self conscious about your arms, don’t draw attention to them. no fancy straps or capped sleeves….

Truly, you need to just go and try different styles. You will not know until the dress is on!

@MrsOliveBird: i totally agree, pick one dress in each possible style and find one that makes you look amazing then consertrate on that style and find one you love in that style… i went into the shops thinking i’m big so if i get a big dress it will hide my flaws … i was wrong it just made me look bigger.

i’m 5’10 uk size 18 i think thats a us 16 (not sure tho) and am a 38 E i’ve found a dress i really like which is rather figure hugging. sweetheart neckline and corseted… it was wonderful when i was being laced up i just watched my waist disapear 🙂 the dress comes out at my hips rather than my waist which makes me look much slimmer. i’m not a huge fan of my arms but i didn’t even notice them at all i was just so focused on my waist lol.

good luck and keep an open mind

Fit and Flare or drop waist gowns are very good for plus size ladies!

I am a similar shape to you. I think the best are the empire waist.  they elongate you.  I think a small bolero jacket or tiny simple cap or flutter sleeves ad just enough coverage to make your arms appear smaller but not too much to draw attention.

I know exactly what you mean about the arms. Im not that big in the tummy area, but my arms are huge! I gained all my weight when I had my son, but before that at 110 lbs, I still had quite large arms. Like someone else said the corsette type dresses are great, since they suck everything in.

I am very self conscious about my arms, and got a cute little bolero from David’s Bridal…I felt MUCH more comfortable once I had it on!
