Does anyone know of stores in the northern, VA area that sells plus size dresses for MOB? I’m having trouble taking her to stores to find something that she can actually try on. She is not a true PLUS SIZE she just is on the larger size and not comfortable wearing something tight so she wants to try on plus sizes.

Do you have a Macys or JcPennys or Dillards there? Those are the best places to find dresses like that in PS. Good luck!

I can’t answer your question but i’m in your boat! I’d love to know, even if they are in the VA area, it would be worth the drive to make Momma happy!

@Mbradley8519: Hi dear!
What exactly are you looking for? Formal or semi? My mother is a size 14, on the smaller end of the plus size scale, and we got her a wonderful formal gown at Davids Bridal. She was able to try on. Have you tried there?
JCPenney’s, Dillards, Dress Barn, Belk, and Macy’s are great department stores they sell wonderful plus size clothing. I am a plus size woman, size 22, and I love those stores.

She is looking for something formal but nothing over the top. She wants it to be tight in her chest area then flowy! Here are a few pictures she just sent me. But the problem is they dont have those dresses (that I could find) for her to try on…so I wasn’t sure what to do. We wanted to go this Sunday but don’t even know where to start. Also, she will cut the dress if it is long to a tea length dress.
Any other suggestions would be really great!

@LuvMySailor: Yeah, Dress Barn is another great one! LOVE that store 😀 They also carry Misses so if the PS is too big she can just pop over there and try on the misses

Steinmart also has some great formal dresses in plus sizes, too!

If you can’t find any stores to try on anything she has in mind, why not order a bunch of them online as many MOB’s do? I know many who ordered at least 10 at a time and returned them all if they weren’t just right. Some stores have generous return policies and its worth paying some shipping charges rather than driving around hoping for the best.
Nordstrom has free shipping both ways,so its worth checking out! Good luck.

I am in the same boat…all the dresses in the stores to try are too small so you need to “imagine” how it may look. So frustrating – especially when the dresses are so expensive! I am sure there is a market for this…and for dresses with sleeves!
The dresses that they call MOB are hideous. If it isn’t some god-awful color, it is racked with beads and rhinestones. Heavy to wear and not attractive. And the other thing is you can bet if you buy one of those it will never get worn again!
I looked at the bridal magazines and noticed which wedding gown designs I was attracted to the most….simple, lace, ruffled – you get the idea. Then I sought out the bridesmaids sections of those designers to see if there was anything that came close to my vision. The Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses are far less expensive than the MOB dresses. And if you stick to a classic design in a good fabric, wear stunning jewelry and shoes you are going to look more like yourself, have something that you may even get to wear again and be able to have an endless selection of colors.
The Siri site, while spendy, has gorgeous dresses that can be copied in the bridesmaids sections of, for example, Watters. The chiffons and the dupioni silks are comfortable and light weight. If you want Siri…they have a great choice of gowns, dresses or suits…and an endless array of jacket styles. It is quite impressive and the clothes are made in the USA.
I ended up chosing a Noir by Lazaro Bridesmaid or Best Man dress and buying extra fabric to make the jacket to go with it in a style that is exactly what I want. I still had to imagine it since the size was wrong in the store but at least I used creativity, spent less and am excited that the dress will make me feel feminine and beautiful.
Good luck…remember that standing up straight, smiling and having a great time is the best look of all!
