1@Enerlise615:  If you’re willing to travel, hop on amtrak to Union Station in Washington Dc, or to Penn Station in Baltimore one day, and grab a zip car. We have a couple of plus-size only shops in the area:

http://www.curvygirlsbridal.com/ in Fairfax, VA

http://www.curvaceouscouture.com/ in Columbia, MD

or Alfred Angelo in Glen Burnie, MD & David’s Bridal (right down the street from AA) in Glen Burnie, MD

I got my dress at curvy girls in Fairfax, and I was so relieved to be able to see myself in a dress. I had a similar experience to you at first. Silly me– I thought any bridal salon was smart enough to know the average sized woman is a street sized 14, but no! It was an absolute demoralizing nightmare until my wedding planner let me in on the plus-sized salons in the area.

I know it’s not terribly close to you, but it might be worth a shot since there are quite a few to choose from over here. Besides, you could make a day of it and check out our Nation’s capital while you’re at it, or shuffle over to Fell’s Point in Baltimore.

Either way, I wish you luck in your search. Don’t stress too much. You’ll be ok. Klienfeld’s should have a few things too.

I’ve heard that Lestan’s Bridal in Brooklyn has a lot of plus size samples. Their reviews are a little scary, but I’m planning on going there to at least try on some gowns and see what looks good on me. Besides Lestan’s, I think Kleinfeld’s and RK Bridal are our best bets in NYC.

RK Bridal has lots of plus size samples up to 26-28.  I bought my dress there and it arrived last week.  I go for my second fitting next Wednesday.  It was a larger size than your posting.  I would recommend you go early in the day.  There are no appointments, but I waited over an hour on Saturday for a consultant.  They were super fantastic at customer service and getting back to me with answers to questions, usually within 15 minutes.

Lestans does have larger samplesto try, but what I didn’t like at lestans is that they don’t let you look through the dresses yourself, the consultant is the only one allowed to touch the dresses. But if you already have an idea of what you like, they are good at pulling similar things and dresses that are figure flattering. Also, their alterations department is horrible, if you buy the dress there, then go somewhere else for alterations.

There is also a place in long island, I think it’s in farmingdale, but I can’t remember what it’s called. Their dresss are actually arranged by size.

RK has tons of plus size dresses at moderate prices and Kleinfelds has tons at mid-high moderate to very high so dont worry! I wouldn’t even worry about finding any other places until you go to both of those as I bet you find a dress!! Tip for kleinfelds is print pics from their webpage and be very clear about what you want from get go. I’d also ask to go into stock room w consultant which they let you do and is helpful. Plus size stock room is like a giant closet so very easy to maneuver. I got my dress at kleinfeld but also went to RK. Both places were totally plus size friendly. I had Sarah at kleinfelds and would recommend her.

Great thread!  I am another NYC bride that will just not fit into a sample size 10, so I feel your pain.  I was so excited to go to Pronovias’ flagship store, as I love their signature flowy styles, and figured the flagship would have a good “plus size” selection.  UGH.  They only had one flowy plus size dress, and the vast majority of their “almost 30” plus size dresses were awful taffeta things.  The consultant was also very rude, acting like I should feel lucky to have anything to try on >:(

That attitude is so ridic to me –  let me know how RK works out for you ๐Ÿ™‚
