I am so happy that I came across this post. I live in northern NJ and I went to David Bridal and was somewhat happy with their selection but it is a little frustrating when they don’t have dresses in our size. The nerve of some consultants though. How can you just visualize a dress on a body. Seriously? When I first started shopping, I was in love with lace mermaid styles. Once I tried it on, my love died just as quick as I took that dress off. I would have been miserable if I would have just ordered something that looked good on a slimmer person.

I was wondering the same thing about RK Bridal and I feel so much better about going there to look for a dress.  I hope your trip to RK and Kleinfeld are successful.

@StuporDuck:  I live about 15 minutes from Curvaceous Couture in MD, that’s where I got my dress…it’s a Pronovias and I LOVE IT!!!! Would recommend Pronovias for fuller figures, their dresses seem to work with curves a bit better than some of the other designers.

Travelling is the option.  I live in Vancouver and when I we to the bridal stores, I had an option of 1 or 2 gowns.  Then I went across the country for work and found stores on the east coast had more live 10-15 to try on.  Back in Toronto, now and again limited.    I guess they sell to their demographic.  Vancouver is loaded with petit asian womens who average a size 2.  The east coast clearly has a larger clientele.   I know its weird, but if you know anyone in retail ask them.  Winners in Canada clearly has plus in varyinf degrees according to the area.  Even within the same province.   One store in West Van has only one rack of plus size, but out in the burbs they gave 4 or 5 racks.

@Enerlise615:  Oh yay!  I’m glad to hear that you might have found your dress 🙂  I’d love to see it!  Also, how was the experience at RK?  Did you go on a weekday or weekend?

@Enerlise615:  dear i so feel you right now..infact i had so little options even on the boutique to look from,,since in this damn country (finland ) and my town, they have so few shops with decent brands…and guess i jad to take risk,,since none of those in my sizes were even close to nice,,and didnt look good on me,,i looked thorugh pronovias dresses on web site ,tryign to find a shape or dress that woudl be flattering on me,and almost all plus size..and bought it without trying it on,i was soo lucky…got in this board lots of nice commetns,..so i would reccomend to take a risk only if you know exaclty what shape you are…what looks good on you,,,take as many advise as u find in internet about plus size and body shape..i can tel with a line you wont go wrong,,stay away from too thin fabricks liek sheer dress similar to night robe,,or anything that dont have a corset built in,,it helps to suck in all tummy..ask me if u want more advise

@FutureMrsSpencer:  well u can visualize,,,i did and it turned out good..i can tell that lace is not best for us plus size,,fabrick is too soft and revealing, and will show all bumps under especially in bodiece,.so maybe  before u fall in love with a dress u consider if that fabrick is suitable for you or not,,also must know if there is a built in corset..without that,.u can be sure it wont look good unless you are skinny enough (msot dress in lace dont look like they have abuilt in corset cose it would show through (but some have ),,i speak by experience,,,my dress was picked from a picture..and by looking at the fabrick and style i thought it might fit me well..i know is crazy but had no choise then doing that,i was lucky i guess but also i tried to chose not necessary the one i loved (if i did that i would have dome bad mistake it would not look good on me)..but the one that had all features to make sure it will look good on me,and obviously i had to like the style and fabrick as well..so i consider  my shape. (rectangular) so no drop waist which would enfasize my hips and waist ,so it would not make an hour glass figure,,cose im almost straight ,same size hips as waist, then big boob,so not a v shape,,would be too deep,,or straight cut, would make them bigger,,a hearts or slightly heart is best,,a line,is good for all of plus size,,,mine was full skirt so it gave more like hour glass shape,,diagonal drapes are greit to give lenght and slimming effect, pleated corset hide the belly folds..any fabrics like ,organza, satin (not to shiny ), tulle ,and lace are ok as long has bodiece have corset built in,,,and remember not puffy dress starting from hips..so no ball gown for us,,or trumpet or murmaid,,unless you are not really that big size (they consider in my opinion plus size already from 16 or 18,which is ridiculus )so if u r like me,,no trumpet or mermaid is reccomended,,it will show all bumps..Hope i can be of help to her,
