I am plus sized as well and never heard of only gaining 9lbs and I am 5’3 size 18. This is my second pregnancy and I am 27 weeks and have only gained 3 pounds, but thats because I had a hard time eating the first six months due to always being sick. With my first pregnancy, I was sick the entire time but gained all 13lbs in the last three months. I would not worry about just gaining 9lbs, it really just depends on your body. I ate healthy and ate anything and every craving imaginable. I didn’t limit myself, however my portion size did change drastically since I could not allow myself to get full. If I felt full at anytime then my meal would come up.
So eat what you want but in moderation and walk as much as you can, you will be just fine. Try not to be a slave to the scale lol

I’m so glad to hear that it is possible. I’m 5′ 9″ and I started at 226. The doctor told me at my very first appointment that I should not gain any more than 13 pounds. I had already set my own goal of no more than 15, so I’m really trying to stick to this. At my 12 week appointment with the midwife I hadn’t gained any weight and she proceeded to tell me that I could gain 20 to 25. I gave her a look of total disbelief and told her what the doctor had said. She kind of laughed and said that doctors are always more strict, so from now on my goal should be to gain on average about 2 pounds per month, with some months gaining more and some less. I think in the last 2 weeks I’ve probably gained a pound or two because I’m slowly starting to pop out in the lower abdomen. I’ve been trying to eat well and I go for walks when it isn’t too hot outside. I was also working A LOT all during the first trimester (I’m 14 weeks now), so that might have helped keep my weight steady. I have a bit more energy now, so I’m going to start going to the gym and taking more walks. Just be as healthy as you can and yes, enjoy the ride!!

I am overweight as well and at my appointment yesterday my doctor told me i should only gain 10 pounds. That kinda scared me just cuz it doesnt seem like alot if the baby is going to weigh more than half of that! I am trying to eat healthy and exercise (although both those things have been tough in the first trimester). So far at about 11 weeks I havent gained or lost so I guess thats good – now lets see if i can do the same for the next 29 weeks lol.

bestbuddies: I think they are telling you this because of the increased chance of you having gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia. I think the point your doc is trying to stress that if you gain a lot of weight it’s going to make your pregnancy risky.
I have gained a ton of weight this pregnancy which i am so ashamed of. It is so hard to control what i eat. My advice to you is exercise where you can. I gained a lot of weight quickley and i took up walking and swimming which slowed it down.
