[Hostesses — I wasn’t sure if this should go on the full-figure board or the SF Bay board, so feel free to move it if you like.]
Gals, my wonderful mom is having a hell of a time finding a MOB dress. She found one from Nordstrom that I adore and that she says she likes… but every time I hear her talk about, it really sounds like she’s settling for something she doesn’t totally love. I want her to feel fabulous on the big day!
Worse than not being able to find something plus-sized that she likes and feels great in, she recently had an appointment at a nice dress shop in SF and the saleswomen made her feel badly about her shape, so she went home quite defeated. My heart is breaking and more than anything I wish I could go shopping with her, but I’m 3,000 miles away — and I feel like I’m being no help at all because I’m a much smaller size myself, so I just don’t know where to look.
Does anyone have any suggestions of good dress shops for plus-sized moms? Not much criteria:
- To the knee (but she can always have a longer dress shortened… in fact, she’s like 5’1″, so it’s likely that she’d even have to have a knee-length dress shortened)
- Flexible on the color, something that looks good with salt-and-pepper hair, and my sister’s Maid/Matron of Honor dress for family photos (it’s a tealish peacock blue)
- Unfortunately I don’t know her size, but I know she shops in the “woman” section at Nordstrom, so she might be like a 1X)
- Could be either a national chain or a store specific to the SF Bay (my folks live on the peninsula)
- A shop that has a nice selection AND kindly salespeople
Anything? Any help would be very much appreciated!

I could be wrong, but I think David’s Bridal has mother of the bride dresses? I’ve heard they usually have a good selection of plus sized dresses, so they might have some good options for your mom?
And I also know another local girl who’s mom found a great plus sized dress at JCPenny.
Or possibly she could look online? Stores like Nordstrom have really good return policies, so maybe she could order a couple options (with no annoying sales people), and just send back what she doesn’t like or doesn’t fit?
Good luck! I know my mom couldn’t find anything she liked in the right colors, and had to end up sewing her own dress and jacket.

Yes!! I am petite/full-figured, and I got a Fantastic MOB gown last year from http://www.keepmeinstitches.biz I was glad to know they also have a store “Rowan’s Bridal” in PA/NJ area I think it is. Because I am only 4’10” It was not petite sized, but I had the gown altered when I got it. They had it in stock (last year) and I had to order it just 2 months before the wedding, and I felt gorgeous in it and got lots of compliments on it. And the price was excellent!!! Feel free to contact me if you like! Make sure she orders by her measurements because I had to order a huge size to get my regular size-so don’t let her get discouraged by it. The quality was awesome. My dressmaker commented on it-she didn’t know how little I paid 😉

My mom isnt shorter, shes 5’8″, but we found great options at Nordstrom at the Westfield center is SF. Most bridal salons carry some options as well (at least, they do in Sonoma County). I also hear that JCPenny has good options. Good Luck!!
