I’m in my young 20s and have around $60,000 between all of my accounts, which includes around $15,000 in retirement.

I own my car, live in an apartment, and have no student loan debt (from scholarships).

Im currently saving up for a down payment on a house, but I would like to have more saved before I start seriously looking.

SO has about $10,000 in an account from his deceased grandmother, but in his regular savings, he has maybe $1,000.

annabeth929 :  The responses are not representative but that’s a far cry from calling responders liars.

misstomorris :  keep in mind that this board has a range of ages, professions, and locations so it’s tough to compare yourself! For me, I had a combination of luck (parents that paid for my private university education) and hard work (working multiple jobs, OT, and being super frugal even once I started making decent money).

elderbee :  there are entire online communities dedicated to talking about personal finance – since it is so taboo to talk about in real life with your friends the internet is a great place to get advice and information and to compare yourself to your peers so you can learn from their experiences. This community posts photos of their pee sticks and talks about blow job frequency but bank account balances suddenly make everyone clutch their pearls?!

LilliV :  Totally this! Why is this such a taboo topic on an anonymous forum?? I thought this thread was super interesting because it’s something I wouldn’t ask IRL, but hey, we are all strangers here! Also so much judgement???

Because some people have been brought up to believe that talking about how much money you have is crass and braggy I was certainly brought up that way, but for people who live their lives out in the open on social media talking about how much you have is probably a joy. But I fail to see what kind of real information is gleaned from this thread; you’re not asking anything relevant, like how much you paid for you reception or gown, you’re basically just asking how rich everyone is.

Like I said earlier, when I talked about needing to show our net worth in order to see houses over a certain pricepoint, I find it nosy and weird.

sunburn :  I worked for a real estate agent briefly in college and he required proof of finances before showing rentals over a certain amount. He’d been burned by too many people hoping to talk the landlord down in price because they knew all along they couldn’t afford it. He also had tenants stop paying after a few months (when they ran out of money) and it soured the relationships with the landlords. Also when apartments are renting at high prices you don’t want to inconvenience the current tenants more than absolutley necessary since you’re hoping they’ll use you to find their next place. It sucks and it’s frustrating, but it’s the difference between renting a $1,500 apartment and a $4,000 apartment.

sunburn :  I just don’t get this logic, and I was brought up similarly to you. I would never discuss such a topic with people in real life, but on an annoymous forum where all one has to do is not participate in this one topic and move on to another, I don’t get calling anyone who particpates “crass and braggy.” Meaning, it’s not like having a conversation with a nosy person where you have to find a way to politely tell them it’s none of their business; you just don’t participate here. And I personally find no “joy” in people thinking “wow, that bear123 is wealthy!”, though I will agree that some of the non-annoymous members on this board that share certain things definitely do enjoy having that notoriety.

I for one find the (real) answers here interesting. Since I don’t discuss the topic with friends or coworkers or acquaintences, it is interesting to see what others have to say about a topic that is not usually discussed.
