I didn’t know anything about this 3 month salary rule.  He just bought me what I liked and money wasn’t an object.  I think people should buy what they like and can afford.

I have 2 engagement rings (sapphire and lab diamonds) I am a bargainista so I got both for screaming deals! I would say about 3 wks salary between the both rings, HOWEVER they are worth alot more than that. we also bought them both together (shared cost) So it would equal out to about a week or so for my spouse. I love sales, and deals =)- I also went with gross income.

I guess this will look a lot different considering everyone is in different income brackets, so one persons “one week salary” could be someone elses “2 week” or “month” even… so that is an interesting fact ot consider

@gracefull:  my husband spent more than 3 months salary on the ring, but when we got engaged/married he was a grad student living off basically pennies so 3+ months salary wasn’t THAT much. He paid cash from his savings though, i would be upset if he had put it on credit and paid interest while making so little.

Definitely not. It was less than one month’s salary.

My fiancé spent about 1 paycheck. We’re extremely frugal and I couldn’t imagine spending 3 months of income on jewelry when I’ll get just as much satisfaction out of a ring that costs half a month income.

Nope, hubby spent equivalent of about 3 weeks. He let it slip that he *had* been saving up for the 3 months’ worth for awhile, but I vetoed that idea quick. Other than we already had a mortgage+typical bills, the type of ring I’d always liked just didn’t cost that much. The extra funds went towards separate existing savings & a fun mini vacation to see a shuttle launch at the Kennedy Space Center.
