Not usually. I tip waitresses because it’s the way they make their money. The people handling the carry outs are making real wages. Not that wages are necessarily fair, but that’s how I look at it.

I do tip every once in a while if I’m really impressed by the service.

If I go and pick it up, I don’t tip.

If it’s delivered to my house, I tip the driver. Typically not as much as I would a waitress though.

Only if they have a specific take-out department in the restaurant. Like I used to work at Outback Steakhouse and they have people that ONLY work take-out. They would always complain when people didn’t tip, but they walked the food out to the car. Otherwise, I don’t tip take-away.

I tip a smaller amount. Less than what I’d tip for actual table service because they’re being paid a wage but I’m also aware that that wage is low so I do tip a few dollars.

I tip a few dollars when I pick it up, 20% for delivery.

I tip for delivery, but not for takeout.

Delivery, not take out. I’ve always wondered if I should. But who does that tip go to? I wasn’t waited on by anyone.

happiekrappie :  Server Bee here! (us teachers need a side hustle…) I ALWAYS tip carry out b/c I don’t know who is packing it and I want to make sure they get tipped for the work.

At the restaurant I work for, servers ($4hr) pack and get to-gos ready. We (1) take the order over the phone, (2) package soup and/or salad, (3) organize the food and make sure it is right + all add ons and sauces are completed, (4) bag and total the order (handwritten tickets… OLD SCHOOL). It can be really stressful when you have a full section of people dining in and you also have to organize and package 3+ to-gos.

Totally different than McDonalds. Those workers are getting minimum wage or more and packaging food to go is no different than putting it on a tray.

crimsonquill157 :  As a server, I can say it FEELS like waiting on someone. Because I am creating the salads and laddeling soups and constantly checking the pass to ensure the order is coming out as requested by the customer.

somathemagical :  I get that – I guess the place I get takeout the most, the cashier puts together most of the to go orders herself; maybe it depends on the restaurant.
