I really like Lawrence but I don’t like the nickname. I have a long name though and I’ve never gone by the nickname of it. I don’t think a nickname is required .

My Dad is a Lawrie – full name Lawrence but he never goes by that.

*edit* he has never had people have trouble pronouncing it. (but I guess Lawrie looks pretty similar to Laurie?)

Lawry/Laurie as a boys nickname is awful.

i like Lawrence as a name, I feel it would be shortened to Larry?

I think Lawrence is a nice dignified name and if it is a family name too, then yes a good choice.

l don’t quite understand why people are concerned about ‘nicknames ‘ though. (Laurie or Lawry is in any case not a nickname , just a short version and Lawrie would be the better spelling) A nickname is something like ‘spud’ or ‘tricky’ or something. You can’t really decide on a nickname for an unborn child, it’s something that gets bestowed because of some characteristic.

But if you want your child called Lawrence and prefer it not to be shortened, you can work at making that happen by gently correcting people as in ‘it’s Meredith, not Merry, thank you ‘. If you don’t mind the shortened  version then l don’t think the spelling will be a problem really, as documents will have his full name, and it’s not that unusual a name.

I also think of Little Women.  I think it would be very cute on a little boy and fits in with a lot of the other popular vintage names.  I think the Laurie spelling is fine with Lawrence full name, like Catherines that go by Kate.  I know a few Lauras my age but the only women I know who go by Laurie are older so I wouldn’t worry about it being a girl’s name.

I’ve known two Lawrence’s in my life… Larry, a lawyer lol.. very fitting profession for the name and a boy I went to school with who simply went by Lawrence – no nickname. I think Lawrie is nice and a good spelling. I prefer Lawrence to Laurence.
