Whatever a plane ticket costs from east coast to texas. My husband is a photog and we’re currently living in Virginia. We are moving to Texas in a couple months where the wedding will be. He already has told me he’s going to be really picky about the photographer and will be trying to micromanage the entire time lol. He talked to a few photographers in the Austin area and none of them were a good fit (too over budget for the ones he liked). So one of his photographer friends is going to come down for the wedding and shoot it as long as we pay his travel – will be under a grand which is 1/4 of what we were going to have to spend to get what we wanted in the area.

Photography is expensive but think about it like this – beyond the hours they put in working at the actual wedding, the real time is spent editing. It’s more than just showing up and snapping a few pics and not thinking about it again. Pre-editing there can easily be 2-3k images from a wedding shot from start of getting ready to reception. Even if the couple only gets 1/3 of those pictures, the photographer still has to edit 600-1000 images (after going through them all and paring them all down!).
It all comes down to how important phography is to you – would you be satisfied as long as the wedding was photographed in SOME way or do you want good, high quality, artistic pictures from it? Read reviews online, compare prices, meet with some people and see what would work. I would also look into studios that shoot weddings as they can be cheaper than independent people whose photography is their single person business.

I think cost is highly dependent on what area you’re in. I know NYC/NJ, LA and SF brides probably have to pay a lot more than brides in the midwest or south. I spent a little over $2k and my package included: engagement shoot with edited photos on dvd, boudoir shoot with edited photos on dvd, all day wedding with 2 photographers, 1000 edited photos on dvd, $200 print credit, and print release. She also set up a really cute slide show for our reception.
Initially when I started looking for photographers, I thought the pricing was outlandish. However, after going through the entire experience, I can honestly say that my photographer and her staff (Elle Imaging) were worth every penny, if not more. I actually found her here on weddingbee, fell in love with her style and was ecstatic to find she was in my price range. Photography is something that is definitely worth splurging on.
