I planned to pay for my dress but my mom surprised me at the bridal shop and purchased it as a gift.

I also find this slightly strange- but I assumed it’s because I’m British, maybe.

My dress was just listed on the general budget with everything else, and my budget was mainly covered by parents. As a couple Fiance and I topped the budget up so we could afford a few more luxury things that were not strictly essential- like a more expensive photographer and a band rather than just a DJ. A dress was definitely on the essential list, but if I’d wanted an expensive dress I would have topped the budget up.

None of that would sound very poetic on the show. I think  it makes more of a dramatic storyline to introduce a specific person who is putting their hand in their pocket to pay for this  specific item. It’s television! 😉

I paid for my dress and it was about $700. I chose David’s Bridal and I knew I wanted to keep it under $1,000. I think my amount was appropriate for what I wanted to spend. I did not feel as if my dress had to be thousands of dollars.

My husband and I planned on paying for the wedding ourselves and my father (who had not been in my life for many years and we had reconnected a year or 2 prior to engagement) had given us a big check at some point during engagement.  We were/are eternally grateful as we were able to have the wedding of our dreams.

I’m paying for my dress, but my mom has offered to help pay for alterations if they end up being costly.

My mom and grandmother have passed so my brother offered to pay for the dress. He set the budget. It was very generous gift that I did not expect. It made my dress more special to me ❤️

raspberrybidet:  I am also in my 30’s and paid for my dress. Yes, I went above the budget I set in my mind but to me this is my ONLY wedding dress and I wanted what I wanted (within reason!). I cut out favors to keep budget balanced. Good luck to you in finding your dream dress =)

raspberrybidet:  i paid for my dress. Traditionally, either the mom or dad pays for it. More recently, I have seen other family members pay for the dress. The only thing I was annoyed with, my mom would give her little comments on my wedding planning and would say “order these favors instead” and I would tell her “no they are too expensive” and she would then tell me “i will pay for them, just get them” and then she wouldn’t pay me for it, so I was stuck paying the bill. Thank GOd I paid for my own dress because if I would have been stuck paying for a more expensive dress and never got the money back,  I would be fuming.

My parents are amazing and are being way more generous than I had ever expected (not to say that they would not give me the world if they could, but I just wasn’t sure they were financially capable). It may help that they are divorced, so it’s not just coming out of one household, and I’m an only child as well. 🙂

raspberrybidet:  I really think those ladies on those shows have some SERIOUS balls to debate with the person who is gracious enough to pay anything for their dress.   You don’t look a gifthorse in the mouth!   I have to pay for my own dress and I can’t imagine ever spending more than $500 on a dress for 1 day.   To me, it’s crazy.  To each their own.

raspberrybidet:  I paid for my dress. My mom really wanted to pay for it, but I had to purchase the dress right away and neither of us were planning on actually buying it at the time – I had the money in my account already and she would have to move some stuff around so it was easier for me to just buy it.  My mom and dad paid for the flowers, a few little decor things, and surprised us by paying for the entire reception.

I voted parents: my Mom actually used to make wedding dresses, so the plan has always been that my dress will be made as a gift from her.

Whether it works out that way in the end we’ll have to wait and see!
