We are going to DR, and staying at the Hard Rock. I haven’t been, but my travel agent says we are in for a treat. I hear DR has incredible beaches too.

I prefer the Dominican Republic. It’s beautiful, especially in Punta Cana and the Southern coast. You can get some really affordable deals there and for me personally I feel safer there.

DR has an incredible reputation for their beaches.  If you end up going there go to Saona Island for a day trip. Incredible beaches!

There are fantastic beaches for sure, but a good piece of advice is if you’re into the really white sandy beaches, avoid Puerto Plata. The beaches there are brown sand so you don’t get as much of the stunning turquoise… although its usually more affordable to go there instead of PC.

Riviera Maya hands down. I’ve been to both Punta Cana, DR and the Riviera Maya, and I would pick the RM a million times over. It’s going to be more expensive than DR, but the food, resorts, everything was just amplified to me personally.

Not that DR isn’t beautiful and also very lovely, but I preferred RM. We stayed at the Excellence Riviera Maya, and the food was amazing along with the wait staff.

@2peasinapod, that’s the resort on my next to-go list! we did the punta cana excellence–loved the service, not so much the food. I talked to a travel agent about it and she said that sometimes they have trouble getting food shipped to the DR, so if you’re more of a foodie, the Riviera Maya may be better. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

Check out Tripadvisor.com! It is the best place to find real reviews from real travelers. I shceduled my entire vacation this past October using tripadvisor and cruisecritic.com (partner sites I believe). We found great excursion companies with wonderful feedback from people who really enjoyed their services. We are also using tripadvisor to plan our Punta Cana honeymoon.

We just went to Punta Cana in March of last year and stayed at the Moon Palace Golf Resort and Spa, which has been rebranded as the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Punta Cana. Its a gorgeous hotel! About 1800 rooms. The beach is amazing. Waves are a little rough but still fun.

I prefer Mexico over the DR (which I didn’t enjoy, though I didn’t stay in Punta Cana). The beaches are probably on par, though I much prefer Mexican culture and Mexican food. Riviera Maya has great beach activities and also some fantastic archaeological spots nearby, such as Chichen Itza (Mayan step pyramids!) and Tulum (Mayan walled city!). It’s also near some eco-parks where you can swim with some dolphins if you wish.

I just returned from Punta Cana for my honeymoon. I have been to the Rivera Maya as well. I would have to almost pick Rivera Maya. The beaches are beautiful at both places but in DR the seas are extremey rough and have a strong undercurrent. So much that we didn’t really enjoy it much. We stayed at the Paradisus Punta which was a beautiful resort, the food was really good in comparsion to the Rivera Maya. I would love to give you more input. Please let me know what your opinion of inexpensive is and I would love to help.
