I’ve made these before and what I did was use a hot glue the ribbon to the styrofoam ball and even stick a few straight pins into it to hold it extra good..with all the other flowers on top and around it, it held up just fine

When I made mine, I used a thin screw driver to punch a hole through the center of the ball, then I took a spool of ribbon and stuck the middle of the long end of the ribbon on the end of the screwdriver (make sure the long end is just a little longer than the ball, so you don’t lose the end of the ribbon inside the ball), then I pushed the ribbon through until it was showing through the end of the ball. I then pulled the ribbon through the ball until it was long enough for the handle and then cut the bottom end of the ribbon and tied a knot where the two loose ends were and then pulled on the handle part to make it tight. Then I added my flowers.

I used a hot glue gun to glue the ribbon the the ball before I placed the flowers on it. As far as length of the ribbon, I just winged it.
