I just recently got a pap smear and it came back abnormal too. They said it was HPV and that they need to do a colposcopy (aka a biopsy I guess). They said most of the time an abnormal pap means HPV but as long as you get the colposcopy (and everything is fine) and then you come back every 6 months to get a pap instead of once a year.

@stardustintheeyes:  I’m sure you’ll be okay.
I had an abormal pap a few years ago as well.  I had to do a cervical biopsy and as it turns out, it was a mild dysplasia. I had to have 3 more paps within that next year though, and everything has been normal since then.

Since you mention it, f you haven’t had an STD test, I would go get one just to be sure.

In most cases when someone that I know personally ends up getting abnormal results, it turns out to be precancerous cells. They had to have them frozen off.

I hope it’s nothing major.

I almost ALWAYS got abnormal paps the first time and would be fine the second.  This doesn’t happen anymore, but in college (even before I lost my virginity) it was always the case.  It was abnormal for me to have it come out normal the first time.

Did you get STD testing done while you were at the Gyno this time?

I know you will not feel better until you find out what’s going on. But I will say, my younger sister got a call back with abnormal results when she was like 18 (scared out of her mind of course) and it was absolutely nothing. Just stay positive 🙂

@stardustintheeyes:  ((HUGS))  A lot of women get some kind of “abnormal” results every once in a while and only rarely is it something serious.  I’ve had that happen a couple of times; it was called “dysplasia.”  I asked the doctor and he said almost all women get things at times that are not STD’s or anything too dangerous but it does need to be taken care of.  He said it can occur just with normal life and hormonal changes, not anything you’ve done wrong.

Take a deep breath and try not to worry.  Keep us posted, I really hope everything turns out ok!

I had abnormals for about 2.5 years straight and finally just got the clear a few months ago to go back to once a year exams, woo! I’ve had cells lasered off, frozen off, had my cervix freaking CAUTERIZED and had numerous colpos and biopsies. I was SO freaked out the first time and completely panicked, but it happens way more frequently to way more women than you’d think. 🙂 Try not to get worked up and worried about it, although I know, easier said than done!

@stardustintheeyes:  Im sorry you are going through this. I remember that exact feeling a year and a half ago. Mine came back precancerous and it was spread pretty bad. I had to have the first layer of my cervix removed. Everyone kept acting like it wasnt a big deal, the nurse that called to tell me even said “calm down, its not like you are dying!” SERIOUSLY?!?! You tell a 22 yr old that you might have cervical cancer and you tell her to calm the f down!?!??? Ugh, but all is well now and the doctor assured me that it shouldnt be an issue when we TTC but I might end up on early bed rest since my cervix will be weaker than normal. I hope you get results fast! Going through all of that made me much more comfortable with my OBGYN but it was a crappy experience. Im really sorry… :/

Try to relax. I had an abnormal pap before and it was nothing. Had sex the day before and that had an effect on my results.  So many little things can alter results. Stay off of google & make an appointment to go back in.

@stardustintheeyes:  This EXACT thing just happened to me weeks ago. YOU WILL BE FINE. I reacted the same way, it sounded so scary, but it happens ALL THE TIME. I cried, freaked out, was thinking terrible things and googling terrible things. I know i felt a lot better when it asked my mother and she said my sister and her have had abnormal paps before and it turned out to be nothing. You will be fine!!

I once had a call saying mine was abnormal. When I called back, they told me it was because they just didn’t get enough cells and wanted me to come back. I’ve heard it happens a lot and it usually means nothing.
