Okay, so I have been thinking about changing my center stone for some time now and luckily, Darling Husband is absolutely fine with it.
In choosing my engagement stone, I knew that I wanted something “different” from the norm, so I chose a radiant. It’s a beautiful 1.4 carat, H (looks really white), VVS2 stone, but in some lighting (mostly direct sunlight….where you want to see your ring shine), I see the dreaded bowtie effect :(. This is something that neither my (then) fiance or myself knew about in regard to the radiant cut when he went to buy my ring. And, being a teacher as well as a perfectionist, shame on me for not doing more research!! DH even said that when he got the ring home and looked at it in the sunlight he got worried because he saw the bowtie and didn’t know what it was. He thought he had gotten “taken” and purchased a bad stone.
So, I have narrowed down my preferences to:a more square stone (i.e. around a 1.5 carat princess or square radiant) or go to a smaller round (around a 1.25 carat) with a bloom setting (round solitaires just aren’t for me). If I did the round with the bloom setting, I’d also be inclinded to set it with baguettes on either side of the stone and I think I like that setting if I choose a princess or square radiant cut, too. To me, baguettes seem so elegant.
Here is my dilemma: I’m worried the smaller round might look too small on my ugly, big hands. If it weren’t for my giant knuckles (my mother TOLD me not to crack them and I didn’t listen!!), I think my ring size would probably be a 6.5-6.75. My ring now is sized to a 7.
My other concern is matching a new setting to my wedding band (2 carat, 3-row micropave eternity band). Do you think it would go with either or my ideas above?
I’m going to my diamond guy in NYC this Thursday and as the day gets closer I seem to get nervous for some reason. I guess changing the whole ring from what he picked out is weighing on me, but so is that black bowtie I see in the sunlight 🙁 And, as I said before, he’s totally fine with whatever I do.
At any rate, I’d love to see your rings if you are a size 7 and you have something similar to what I describe. To help you out, here are some pictures I found online and on the bee.
Thank you so much for reading this far and for your help! 🙂
This is jholler25’s round (I hope she doesn’t mind!) with bloom setting. Again, I’d add baguettes to mine:
Here is a princess with baguetes that I like:
And here is my set….which you all are probably sick of seeing!
