Kaites4:  Did you place the address in the right place? The envelopes are scanned by a machine, and if you have the address incorrectly placed, the machine can scan the return adress.

Was it the post office who scratched off the address/mailed it back?  Sometimes if mail is accidently delivered to the wrong address, people will scratch it off themselves and stick it back in the mail.

Since you’re located in Mass I’d guess the person you sent it to couldn’t receive their mail. The mail persons aren’t dropping off a lot of mail due to the snow so it becomes “undeliverable”. Maybe after so many “undeliverable” attempts it gets returned to sender? Then it could have gone through the second time because the addressee either picked up their mail at the P.O. or cleared the snow.

Kaites4: The really sucks about yours STDs.  Maybe see for the invites if you can put your return address on the back on the flap of the envelope instead of on the front so there isn’t a confusion of address?

Hand cancelling is different, it’s more to make sure that the envelope isn’t damaged in the process of cancelling out the stamp to make sure the stamp isn’t used again.  On the right is a hand cancelled stamp, on the left, it went through a machine.  See how nice and pretty it looks?

The USPS wants the return address in the upper corner, on the same side the guest address is located. If you put it on the back flap, there’s a chance it will get turned around, in postal processing, and the machine will scan the address on the back, and send it back to you.

One of our StDs took 3 weeks to come back to us. It was mailed locally, and should have gotten there in one day. I made the mistake of not putting the apartment number in the main body of the address; I put it in the upper left corner. The excuse was that the address was incomplete (it was a large, apartment complex with many buildings), even though it was all on the front, for the delivery person to see.

Undeliverable can mean a lot of things. The mailbox could be blocked (we used to have cars park in front of ours to get kids off the bus…so annoying!) or the recipient hasn’t cleared off their steps/pathway to the mailbox.
