My Father-In-Law just had major surgery and is expected to be out of work for several months. We live on the other side of the country and would like to send something to let him know we are thinking of him and keep him busy during his recovering… but I am drawing a complete blank!!
I was thinking of sending some of his favorite movies, some books (although I don’t think he is much of a reader), maybe some sweets, but I don’t know!

How sweet of you! I think the movies are a good idea – maybe also books on tape (if he doesn’t read, he still might like to listen). Depending on what kind of surgery he had, his diet might be restricted – maybe a fruit basket? Does he have a laptop computer or tablet? Maybe he might like a computer game. Good luck!

You don’t say the kind of surgery, but if he will have trouble bending over after he is mobile again, one of those ‘reacher/grabber’ things is great (i found that out the first time after surgery that i dropped the tv remote on the floor and had absolutely no way to pick it up). If he uses a smartphone or tablet, mabe a gift certificate to buy some fun apps? If he does puzzles, there are a lot of online games like words with friends, scrabble, etc. If he is older, they still sell paper versions of suduko, crosswords, etc.
