We had a destination wedding in April but my family is putting on a reception party for us when we fly home this summer. What usually goes on at these parties and did you wear your dress again? Were the guests expecting a full reception complete with all the traditional activities or was it more laid-back?

We got married in May. We closed on our first house In April so we’re having a housewarming/reception in our backyard. We’re planning on having a local bbq joint cater and then a cookie cake lol. We’re going to show our wedding video, have a guest book and some yard games. I would love to wear my dress again, but Darling Husband doesn’t want to wear his suit in 100 degree weather so I don’t want him to be in shorts and me in my fancy dress lol. I’m kinda hoping someone will be like “go put your dress on!” And then I’ll have an excuse haha.

If you go to the Knot, the will say YOU CANNOT WEAR YOUR WEDDING DRESS.
As a guest, I would say, do what you want, just let people know how to dress. Please dont have a backyard BBQ, and then some guests will be embarrassed if they show up in shorts.

Most of the post wedding receptions I’ve attended they were pretty laid back and casual – more of a get together – let’s celebrate. I wouldn’t wear my dress – that seems a bit much IMO.

I have been to three of these, and all the brides did not wear their wedding dress, but a nice dress. My post-wedding reception was a Chinese banquet (We’re both Chinese), and I wore a red cheongsam dress for it. Red is a traditional wedding color in the Chinese culture. Non-Asian ones that I have been to, the bride wore white, but a more casual white dress.

What about a cute white tulle skirt and a white tank top?? (or color of your choice?) it saids bridal to me at a casual backyard reception!
Or you could have a set time where you go in and try it on for your guests!! They would love that as well!!

My Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law rented a hall and a DJ and are making food and decorations/centrepieces. It’s a bit bigger than I expected but I have a simple but elegant knee-length white dress that I’m thinking of wearing since the guests are going to be dressed up. ☺️
