I got my pics today too! I’m not unhappy with the dress, I just think it’s not quite as amazing as I pictured. I’m trying to figure out how I feel. I think I’m trying to convince myself it can be amazing with a few changes.

I know that satin gowns aren’t very trendy at the moment, so several bees would probably never select a dress like this – but keeping in mind that I wanted an all satin gown with structure, this dress just feels a bit…. limp.

The good news is I like the quality of the fabric (that’s a HUGE relief!) and I think they totally nailed the bow and the train – which are the major design elements. They got it perfect! But the skirt is off, and also they gave me a straight across neckline instead of a curved neckline (that should be an easy revision I think).

I’m just surprised that I’m not more excited.

But then again — all the photos of dresses in magazines are all super high end fashion photography with amazing lighitng and hours of photoshop – so duh, of course they look amazing. Seeing the photos with normal un-altered lighting might be part of what’s making the dress look so lackluster? Maybe it’s realy fine after all?

Here is the inspiration bow and below is the actual dress (they did a great job on the bow!):

But the shape of the silhouette is wrong. It was suppose to be like this, vintage with 2 pleats, structured like a bell – so it sort of “pops out” at the waist:

Bell shaped silhouette:

And instead I got this – the skirt is too limp (it’s fine, but it’s not amazing) The two pleats seem to just sit there, not like the vintage pleats above. But that’s a drawing, so maybe the actual dress wouldn’t look like that? The good news is the bow is wider than I am, which is *AWESOME*!

And here’s the thing I’m really worried about – why is the seem between the skirt and the bodice angled? This should be straingt like a belt aroun the waist. And also, if it were straight it might help achieve the silhouette listed above. This seem is way off, but I’m not sure yet if this is something that can be altered?

And then the last detail, I think is easy to fix, is the neckline. I asked for a soft curve, like a dip, in the neckline and they gave me straigt across.

What do you think Bees?

Please let me know if you catch anything I’m missing – but please be kind. I don’t think I can handle anything too critical. I am trying to convince myself I love it.

skylar84:  First of all, the dress is lovely.

The sape you’re looking for might require a stiffer fabric or a different type of pleat. If you look at the pleat in the picture below the Simplicity pattern they come from the center and fold out almost from a point. This might be why the fabric las differently.

I agree that the neck will be an easy fix… and the bow is lovely.

skylar84:  LOVE the bow! Gorgeous. I agree – the neckline should be an easy fix.

I think the angled waist-line is good, and would help w/ the pop-out. Also the right crinoline underneath might help?

I think what needs to be fixed is the angle of the pleats. They are straight, and you wan them to cut at a diagnal like this:  /// \\\  I think that’s a doable fix. (Though I’m no tailor!)

SqueeMcgee:  Thank you! I just spoke with my mom (she is a master seamstress!) and she said the same thing. She sad they can actually add a stiffener / interfacing under the satin so it can pop out at the waist. I’m super relieved! She even said we could get that altered here if they aren’t able to do it.

glenecho2015:  I’m so happy to hear you say that abotu the seem! That’s also the same thing my mom said. She told me the angled seem would help, not hurt, and I should leave it as is. Phewwwww!

Zelda1:  Thank God the bow turned out!! Otherwise I’d be in tears. Lol! Ok, I will talk to them about adding some volume and hopefully all will be well.

I feel like the words “giant bow” and “detachable train” are the two most super-90s, non-trendy words you can possibly say regarding wedding fashion right now. I feel like this dress is such a gamble, man I hope it works!

Also, I’m marrying an Indian and I’m wearing about 7 lbs of Indian jewelry: two necklaces, huge earrings, 21 bangles per arm (seriously! It’s like wearing armor!) and head jewelry – so don’t let the plain dress fool you, I wlll have loads of bling on the actual wedding day.

O my gosh I’m starting to get excited again!!!!! yay.

skylar84:  Let me just say again that the bow is AMAZING! And I love Indian wedding bling! That’s going to be awesome. I still have all my bracelets from the wedding of a Pakistani friend, and wish I had a reason to wear them. 🙂

That’s going to look fantastic w/ the dress.
