So I am really seriously thinking of getting a reception dress. I’m looking for a dress that’s tea length and maybe with a coloured underlay to it.

My wedding is in the beginning of July and I’m willing to spend abou $150-200. Would these shops be a good idea? Is my budget unrealistic? If it’s doable, could somebody give me the info to shop and shop 2.0?

naturalflight:  I will PM you a seller on Etsy that has some great tea length dresses in that price range. They have great reviews.

Hey Bees! Wanted to share my experience with Shop A (previously Etsy shop starting with M).

Background: Getting married June 2016. I’ve always wanted a red dress,  but for some reason I bought a light peach/pink one a few months ago. Enter dress regret. I was even more disappointed when I found that many “classic” looking red dresses were way out of my budget and everything else looked too “I’m-going-to-a-fancy-NYE-party”. So I grabbed my inspiration dress and and set off to Shop A. I didn’t actually place my order until February, because I was unsure, and asked for a due date of mid-March to have enough time for Plan C/alterations.

Inspiration dress:

I asked for satin instead of velvet, low back, darker red and a higher v-neck. Also,  less poofiness.

Communication: The owner was very fast to respond, but seemed to ask me questions I had already answered. I ordered before Chinese New Year (she didn’t mention it during ordering), so gave her some time (~2.5 weeks) before following up. When I did follow up, she mentioned that is was peak season and asked me again when it was due. More questions followed about what color did I want again? And what day was it again? If I had been a bride that ordered last minute, I would’ve been freaking out. Overall,  I was reasonably patient and thankful of her and I think she noticed that.

Delivery: Very fast. The dress arrived today (3/17) after 1 day delivery it seems. The tracking details are crazy.

Expectations: I wanted a classic red dress with a simple cut, but just enough wow-factor. I was afraid of the satin looking too cheap, the color being too purplely burgundy/dark, and my boobs popping out.  I was also afraid of the workmanship since it seemed to be rushed.

Reality: It could have been worse. The fit up top is all sorts of wrong. I must have over-measured my arm area and was too conservative on back and front v-neck. On a positive note,  it’s the perfect red,  the hem is at the right length,  and the waist is just right. The workmanship is phenomenal with the time they had. As predicted,  I will have to take the dress for alterations. Sorry for the picture quality!

I’m going to lower the back to the waist,  fix my armpits, and lower the front v-neck to make it look less dowdy. Before and after pictures coming soon!

sarahtaylor:  ouch… The model dress was my reception dress.

i modified it on purpose, as my family is a tad conservative. It was also done in less than 20 days, as a rush order. I also modified the train. Honestly- they shouldn’t have put it next to the “inspiration”, because it was altered a lot.

it did look stunning in reality. If you PM me, I can share some videos of it in real life. It was definitely a jaw dropper.

Zelda1:  I’m so sorry!! see my posts where I’m like omg I’m dumb after I actually looked at the other photos and the video!!!! I tried to modify the post but couldn’t 🙁 It looked soooo amazing on you especially. I want it more modest as well. I just have a weird vendetta about sequins, I think, to be honeset? I may actually order it. Fiance told me I was being crazy (after I already admited I was being, hah).

Sigh. I’m having a hard time figuring out which shop to use for my dress. There’s too many options! Lol. I have a simple design but I still want it to look nice.

tumbleweed:  Ahhh i’ve just orddred with Shop A. So far communucation has been excellent but obvously i ahven’t seen any pics or had the dress yet. I’m worried my measurments were also too conservative? I’ve already prepared myself for alterations but i’m getting all nervous. It’s really good to hear though the the workmanship is excellent. Overall are you happy with price paid and quality?

ninkmc:  Yes, I’m happy with quality for the price paid. I went into this purchase knowing there would have to be alterations, so the fact that there’s good bones to work with makes it easier. I think if someone were looking for an exact replica out of the box, they would sorely be disappointed. Hopefully that makes you feel less nervous? You have until September, so plenty of time for Plan B. 🙂
