Definitely postcards!  Postage is cheaper, and you can get 100 custom designed postcards from Vistaprint for less than $20 (they always have some sort of sale going on!)  We plan to do the same thing for our thank you cards.

Here’s our Save the Date postcard picture (but in B&W):

Our friends all loved it.  Postcards are definitely the way to go if you are trying to save money!

I did oversized postcards from Vistaprint (on the high-quality gloss), and honestly, I wish I had put them in envelopes. It was only like $3 or $4 more to get envelopes, and the postage was the same (since they were oversized, they did not qualify for postcard rates). I had quite a few people tell me they thought it was an advertisement at first until they looked more closely, so I wonder how many got tossed without people looking at them. Also, I would have had more space on the backside of the postcard for the design/information, and they would have had less likelihood of getting messed up in the mail.

If you’re doing a small postcard, then it’s a little bigger price difference because of postage, but I think you run even more chance of them getting torn up in the mail or lost in junk mail.

We went to Vista Print they had a great deal and was really cheap, and the quailty was good

We did small STD card with small envelopes from Wedding Paper Divas. Not as cheap as Vistaprint postcards but they looked great and set the tone for our formal wedding. I think if you are doing a formal event, I would err on the side of an envelope, but if it is fun and casual, then just a simple, regular postcard is fine.

postcards are good, I would make sure they are waterproof if you can. I receive one and the couple’s pictures were smeared where a few rain drops fell on it.
