- Wedding: September 2012
We’ve been having $$ issues lately. Nothing extremely drastic. But as the key example, we told FH’s family that unfortunately, we just do not have an extra $1400 to fly back to NY for the holidays (much less buying gifts on top of that). His mom did not approve of this, sent us a check, told us we were coming, we said “Yes ma’am,” and are packing our bags tonight.
FH decided a while ago that it would probably be best to have the wedding back in NY, because many people we’d want to invite wouldn’t be willing to travel to CO. So that kind of dumps the idea of a completely microscopic budget wedding, no matter what we do. You can only cut down on cross-country travel costs so much.
If we’re too broke to get ourselves there for the holidays, we’re obviously too broke to do much planning for even a relatively inexpensive destination wedding (for us, anyway). FH’s mom asks about how planning is going every few times she calls, and it’s really getting on his nerves, not to mention the fact that I really just flat out have nothing new to say about it.
So I brought up the idea of postponing the wedding for a year. FH is totally ok with this.
It’ll give us time to save up, or figure out other ways to get more $$. The venue I was hoping for is booked for 2011 anyway, so now there will actually be a chance we can get it. What we do have to spend money on can be spread out over a longer time period, which will make it easier to handle. We can’t afford to put me on FH’s health insurance at the moment anyway, so we’re not really missing much. We’re already common-law married as far as Colorado is concerned, we just haven’t done the extra paperwork to make it official anywhere else.
I must say that even though I’m a little bummed, I’m actually quite relieved!! I didn’t think I would be. Usually money issues only bother me for a short period of time, I have my own personal pity-party for a few hours, then I get over the issue or try an alternative. But this was really getting me down. It’s so nice not to have to worry about it as much!
