@Jayceedee:  Whew, just started researching and am running into these issues. It seems that the best thing to do is get the legal name change order done FIRST, before you go to the SSA–that way you won’t have problems with the DMV. But it costs $210!! What a pain in the ass.

I was completely stunned when I learned, when searching online to help a fellow bee, that a handful of states have this obstacle to overcome.

“First Maiden Middle” actually has been the formal, tradtional manner in which women in many parts of the US have changed their names for generations. There was nothing modern about this concept (though a growing number of modern brides are embracing it, for obvious reasons), which allows women to take their husbands’ surnames while maintaning an obvious connection to their families of origin.

At least one of my grandmothers, and one of my DH’s grandmothers did this way back in the late 1920s/early 1930s.  Also, by way of example, author Laura Ingalls Wilder did it, and nearly all (if not all) of the women in the famous Kennedy family have done it for generations. I also chose to do this.
