I have stainless and hard anodized and I love them both for different things.  If I could only choose one, I would go with the hard anodized.  although I’m sure you will get more people saying stainless.  I would go with stainless if you are advanced cooks, have a gas stove, and know what you are doing when it comes to not burning things

My fiance is a fine dining chef and the only thing he cooks with is Stainless steel…At work, it’s whatever they have…at home, it’s All Clad…So now we have pots and pans that cost more than our cars (together!) but they are awesome!

We registered for a set of All Clad stainless steel.  I don’t do much cooking, but I hope to change that and I wanted a good basic set.  I would talk to someone at the store and explain your needs and cooking habits.  An experienced sales person should be able to help you.

Oh, another thing — a registry assistant at Williams Sonoma suggested to register for a set and also for each piece individually.  People are more likely to buy individual pieces than an entire set.  The pieces add up to more than the cost of the set.  You can then bring the pieces in and apply them to the set and get credit for the leftover amount.

My Fiance can’t do without the non-stick (and I admit I love how easy it is to clean) so stainless is out.  We’re registering for the Cuisinart Greenware set.  Besides the environmental benefits, I really like that they’re not expensive.  I don’t want pots and pans that cost more than my car.  I’m not that good of a cook and just buying the pots won’t make me one!  🙂
